------
A poor ghetto, with dark houses, at night. The sweet scent of blood from his clothes and the house behind him, mixing with the rainfall. And his mistress, her nephew-the annoying brat, himself, and …him, the demon butler Sebastian. What a perfect tableau this made.
She, so beautiful in red, went over to the boy. “How unfortunate….my sister’s son. If you hadn’t discovered this, we could still have played chess together.” And Juliet saw her hand ball into a fist. “However…I’M NOT GOING TO GO EASY ON YOU ANYMORE!!” she screamed.
That was his cue. Swiftly, he summoned his chainsaw into existence and started it up. The motor roared, and he leapt towards the black-haired demon, slicing down savagely. But the butler stopped his blade by holding it on either side, still protecting his master, that brat. ”Wh-what is that?” the child asked.
The demon answered. “In order to capture souls, all shinigami have their own tool. Its name is Shinigami Scythe. I’ve only seen this sort of thing for the first time…The shinigami’s scythe really is a troublesome thing,” he added as he pushed his hair out of his face.
“A regular scythe is so old-fashioned, don’t you think?” Juliet said to both of them, stopping the motor. “The one I’m using was specially made to order. This ‘shinigami’s scythe’ I’m using will play a duet with the soul’s last moments! Of course, I guarantee it’s first rate!” He smiled happily, dangerously. “This is a tool used by the gods to cut through anything!”
He then addressed the demon. “I’ve always been downright honest, to the point where my body’s gotten slow…I really want to do some vigorous exercise with you~” Juliet blew him a little kiss. Sebastian was just so perfect.
”Can you not say such revolting things? And I’m working, too…” the demon responded impassively.
“Mmm…you’re so unfun!” Juliet said, spastically waving the scythe up and down. “This part of you, I can’t take it anymore, Sebast-chan~”
“Oh, Sebast-chan, I do love red the most,” he said dreamily. “Hair, clothes, lipstick, I love them to be red. That’s why I love using fresh blood to do makeup for those ugly women. The more flamboyant a woman is, the more she’s as beautiful as a poisonous flower, right?” His eyes fixed on the demon, his smile still there. “A cool man who uses the color of wild roses to dress up would definitely be beautiful, Sebast-chan… I want to make you use that beautiful wild rose color, and tear your body up to its deepest core, Sebast-chan~”
The demon looked at him coldly. ”Shinigami should quietly capture the souls that are about to depart from this world. Butlers are supposed to follow their master like a shadow. To violate these two principles like you have makes me want to throw up.”
“Hey, I really tried my best as a butler to serve my master!” Juliet cried in irritation. “I even worked without my makeup or dressing up”
”How shocking…” Sebastian said. “And you still call yourself a butler?”
That was met with the broadest smile Juliet had shown yet. Resting his scythe on his shoulder, he flashed the sign for “I love you”.
“Even if I’m like this, I’m still the butler of DEATH!”
The boy took off the eyepatch he was wearing and spoke to Sebastian. ”In the name of Her Majesty and my own wretched name, I command you! CAPTURE THEM!” The demon took off his gloves. “Yes, my lord.” He then proceeded to remove his jacket and placed it on the boy, muttering something about the boy not getting cold.
“I won’t let you both go so easily!” Juliet cried, switching on the scythe again. “Lately, I’ve been encountering only unsophisticated prey. My scythe and I are unsatisfied. Oh!” He jumped up high, aiming for the demon and boy, but the demon moved them both swiftly out of the way. “If I am to be hunted down, then I’d rather be the one to do the hunting, Sebast-chan! Let us play a wonderful hide and seek!”
”I think I have said this before. Please don’t say such nauseating things!” The demon swiftly evaded Juliet’s blow.
“Don’t be like that! I’m sure you’ll become addicted to the taste of my scythe…OH!” Sebastian had blocked his attack with a lamppost pole. “Heh~♥ You’re quite the man, Sebast-chan! I like this about you too~ However…” he paused, then smiled psychotically. “This is the real beginning of the show!” His scythe was easily sawing through the pole. “If you get cut by my scythe, that lamppost you have in your hands would be no different than a tree branch!” The scythe cut through the pole, and began to destroy the demon’s arm.
The blood flew out and turned into film strips, and began playing the shocked demon’s memories. When the brief movie was over, Sebastian was standing shakily.
“…How is it?” Juliet asked. “It’s filled with dramatic pain, isn’t it? That was the power of the shinigami, Cinematic Record. Shinigami can use Cinematic Record to relive the memories of those on the to-die list, for assessment. What kind of person is he? What kind of life had he led? Whether to let him live on? ….Or to kill him?” His smile was now of normal proportions as he calmly explained. “The general saying that one’s life flashes before their eyes just prior to death, that is just the shinigami replaying the human’s memories. ‘This person should die’…a person like this…we will use our scythe to sever the link between his memories and his soul, and that is how we ‘end’ his life.”
The demon’s neutral face didn’t change. “I think that is just a terrible interest, and this sort of spying activity…is really the worst.”
“No, no!” Juliet and Sebastian were back in their battle. “This is work! But…right! A good man’s past makes people curious. But if he’s a bad man….” He swiftly moved in front of Sebastian and slashed down. “Then it makes me want to see even more!” The demon tried to push the saw away, but only delayed it, and the scythe began to cut into the wall behind him. Juliet chuckled. “It’s been boring trying to find humans to play with me, Sebast-chan!” He moved in closer, as the blade inched closer. “Once struck by the shinigami’s scythe, regardless of memories, soul, or space…” The scythe was nearly on the demon’s flesh. “Even if it’s a demon, it’ll be sliced!” His blood tingled with anticipation, and his smile grew sadistic. No matter how beautiful Sebastian was now, he’d be even more so when Juliet was done with him, leaving the demon colored that most precious red…The delay would only make it better.
He heard his mistress-no, his partner shrieking. It meant nothing to him at the moment. All that mattered was cutting Sebastian to shreds….but he seemed distracted, his eyes fixed on the boy. Suddenly, his red eyes had slit pupils, and he screamed. ”YOUNG MASTER!” He moved as a wraith, sustaining a huge cut by the scythe, but headed straight for Juliet’s partner. The boy screamed at him. ”STOP IT SEBASTIAN! Don’t kill her!” Then he noticed the cut that had mutilated Sebastian’s arm.
Juliet walked over. “Heh! Sebast-chan‘s endurance is pretty good~ His arm was already useless, but he still had to go to help that little brat. Compared to that, what do you have to say for yourself?”
He turned to his partner. “Madam Red! Kill that little brat already!” Her lips slowly formed a word. ”Can’t…” “Eh?” Was she serious?
”So I really couldn’t do it… I…can’t kill this child…” The tears rolled down her face, but Juliet was unaffected.
In fact, he was irritated. “You’re saying this now? After killing so many women!” Was she honestly backing out, being a coward? “If you don’t kill that little brat, it’ll be your turn to get killed! And you have a shinigami helping you too!”
”But! But!” she cried. ”This child is my-“ To Juliet, it was nothing but pathetic whining. He decided he was sick of it.
In one swift move, he plunged his scythe into her chest, ripping up her heart as it easily cut through her bones and flesh. “How disappointing…Madam Red.” He pulled it out smoothly, her blood on the blade metallic crimson. “I am no longer interested in an ordinary woman like you.”
Instantly her memories appeared, playing out scenes from her childhood, adolescence, and adulthood in rapid succession, detailing her envy of her sister, her loss, her hate, how she and Juliet met, her murders. Juliet watched it all with little interest. He knew all of her reasons, her past. Angelina had seemed so beautiful, so extraordinary when he’d first met her, and it was that which had motivated him to help her, along with his empathy. She had been as such, and now here she was…nothing but a near-corpse, victim of her own sabotage, degraded to a normal woman undeserving of his assistance.
“I love the way you are being dyed by the blood spurting out, Madam Red,” he said to her as she fell to the ground.
“I am not interested in the you who got carried away by meaningless emotions. I helped you create alibis. Just for you, I broke the rules of the shinigami and helped you kill those women not in the death list. You have disappointed me! In the end, you are no different from the ordinary woman.” He removed his black coat and tossed it aside carelessly. “You are not fit to wear red.” He took her red coat off her body and put it on himself.
“The curtain of this cheap theatre act that is your life falls now. Goodbye, Madam!”
Juliet turned and began to walk away. Away from his wasted time and effort, from his trashed emotion, from his now-meaningless crimes, from it all.
