After much consideration, Argent had decided that below-deck smelled worse than above-deck and had gone through the protracted processes of relocating the stairs and climbing up them.

Emerging into the sunlight, then, he was mildly surprised to find that a great deal of sea water had somehow washed up on deck and was now pooling around the toes of his shoes and trickling down the stairs behind him. He followed the wet trail with his eyes until he located a squirmy, pink tentacle -- one of many.

Then, he raised his eyebrows and said vaguely, "Well now."

Another friend! This was just Bernard's lucky day! Or rather, it was this boy's lucky day to find Bernard. There were so many supple young things on this ark, it was like opening a treasure chest on Christmas morning or something! Bernard waved her tentacles in what she hoped was an impressive manner, wanting to catch the boy's out-reaching friendship.

The tentacle undulated back and forth in far too furious a manner for it to be simply blowing about in the wind. Argent tilted his head to the side thoughtfully. On the one hand, he thought, I really ought to run away. But on the other, some part of him thought that that would be premature; the tentacles didn't seem to be doing anything menacing. In fact, all that waving could be interpreted as a sort of greeting.

With that in mind, Argent slowly raised one arm over his head and waved in back and forth a few time, experimentally.

Excited that he seemed to reciprocate her excitement in meeting, Bernard waved more widely, chirping happily as she approached. Humans seemed to like shaking hands, so she reached out with two of her tentacles and took one of his, shaking it slowly.

The second the slippery, clammy tentacle slid round his wrist, Argent wanted to yank his hand back and run. But then, the tentacle began to waggle up and down in a methodical rhythm that was so much like a handshake that he really couldn't think what else it could be.

Steeling himself, he let his fingers close around a part of the tentacle -- though it was so large, they couldn't quite make it all the way around -- and tried giving it a proper shake back.

"Er," he said, "how do you do?"
