Phoenix nodded a little at her comment, his attention, now that he was here, caught on the grisly remains above them. His nostrils flared with his breathing, and he bared his teeth a little at the cold night sky.

"Definately more'n one of the poor bastards. Three hands, see?" He pointed at each one in turn. "Died quickly, but didn't die easy. Hnn." He considered the scene, scowling thoughtfully, then glanced back at Bastet.

"Watch yer head, kitten," Phoenix warned her, moving past to haul himself upwards onto the branch closest to the remains.

Once perched on the limb, he leaned over to examine the part nearest to him, which happened to be an arm, cut off just above the elbow joint. "This one's a girl." He reached out to brush his fingertips over the limp white wrist. "Young. Looks like somethin' was chewin' on her." He tilted his head, considering. "About the right size to be a human mouth, but whatever it was got too many teeth to be normal. Smells like.." he paused, and snuffed at the air, his breath smoking out in front of him. A low growl started in his throat. He didn't look down at Bastet, but at the hand in front of him, the delicate fingers. His voice, when he spoke, was thick and husky, like it was coming up from the middle of him and out through clenched teeth. "Musky. Sweet. Like an animal got itself worked up for the kill. Only it didn't kill her right away. Had his way with her first. Made sure she was screamin' even before he put his jaws to her. Sick sonofabitch."

At any other time Bastet would have raised an eyebrow or made some teasing remark about being called kitten...but it was hardly relevant right now.

She kept her face impassive as Phoenix spoke, her mind reviewing and filing away each bit of information he recited. He'd confirmed what she'd suspected; someone not quite human. She watched as he leaned forward, identifying and analyzing scents with incredible speed and confidence.

But she couldn't help but close her eyes briefly at his last statement, momentarily shaken. Raped, then eaten? Yes, the killer had certainly enjoyed himself.

"Sick is right," she replied, her voice tight. "Blood discovered other body parts maybe...a month and a half or two months ago. And she said she'd been finding them for at least a month before that. I made her promise to stay away. I'd meant to look into it, but got...distracted." With so many people close to her dying and disappearing in quick succession, she'd had little time or energy to devote to this; it had actually slipped her mind until tonight.

"So we're looking for a non-human, someone who can climb this tree while carrying all this," she said, thoughtfully. "Is there a trail back down?"

Phoenix's frown deepened when Bastet mentioned Blood's previous discoveries, not only because it meant someone was getting away with murder and worse on a routine basis. He didn't like the thought of the kid getting involved -- even if she could take care of herself. He had a feeling the kind of person who could scatter bodies like fallen leaves probably didn't think pink-haired warriors too much of a challenge.

At her question about the trail, Phoenix shook his head, glancing up through the branches.

"Only trails up here are the ones we've been leavin' behind, darlin'. Nothin' like this," he nodded towards the dismembered limbs.

"Way I see it," he continued, looking back down at Bastet, "either we're dealin' with someone who can walk on air like it's solid ground, or whoever it was started his meal somewhere else," he pointed upwards, "and threw out what he couldn't finish for us to find. Question is, what kinda person rapes and kills a buncha folk, then dumps the leftovers like a kid that won't eat his vegetables?"

Bastet nodded, her face grim as she looked up at Phoenix. "I can walk on air," she told him. "And a few others can fly." But she couldn't picture Chosen doing this...and while she didn't know Hybrid and Pure, she had no reason to think either of them responsible either. "So it's possible."

She frowned, dropping her eyes for a moment. "Someone confident that they won't be found...which is strange. I wouldn't say a lot of people come up here, but it's hardly inaccessible. It seems an odd choice for someone who's obviously taken enough care not to be discovered yet."

Whoever this was obviously had the privacy to do this at his leisure...and how was he hiding all signs of his activities?
