From that first fatherly embrace it had practically been love at first sight for Spring. One of his most cherished memories was of the stilted jabbering, the words "my son," and that tender kiss to his forehead; from the moment they had met Spring was already Gai's son. Even if he had not been able to hear his name, even if they were really just student and teacher, Spring felt that those initial feelings must have latched on to a latent truth; one that they had founded before coming to the Edensphere. A tie that even total memory loss could not undo.
The hand on his shoulder was welcomed with ease, and the words were like a balm on Spring's heart. He had feared losing the family he had been welcomed into ever since the truth about Gai being his not-father had come out, but hearing a reassurance like that made all the hesitation melt away. Spring knew the fears would come back in time. Lately, he had begun to realize that 'fearing' was a part of himself, but he could overcome it as long as he had Gai-sensei around. Bell helped with that too, and his new friends, but Gai especially.
Spring reached up and touched his sensei's hand. "I do like being home too." His smile widened into a grin. "That is where you and Bell-san are, after all." And the dogs and Turtle, too.
"That is strange. If you cannot remember but they are things you used to know, then why won't they come out?" Spring looked around again, but everywhere it looked to be normal. Nothing hidden in the shadows for him here, it seemed. Or at least not yet. "... The Tree isn't here, either."
Gai still remembered that moment, though now he recalled it with some guilt. He had swept in and wrapped Spring in what he believed to be true when he was completely wrong. It had been with the best intentions. That didn't change how wrong he'd been and how they'd just gone for it. But he still felt that love and so he didn't know how much that made up for them running with the notion of blood relations.
The hand on his got a smile. It was welcoming; Spring wanted the touch. Spring's words were just as comforting. He wanted to stay with Gai and Bell, even though Bell teased and tried to seem aloof. His so student was seeing underneath the underneath. "Then it shall remain where all three of us are."
He shrugged at the question. "Perhaps because I do not yet know what they are they cannot manifest. I am not sure. There was a girl over here earlier, I think." Gai pointed at one shadow that was a bit behind Spring. "I could see her silhouette, and there was something... lumpy but familiar about the shape of her head. I do not know why." Then he was gesturing to the miniature Tree in front of him. "It is. It is simply very small. And still as inscrutable."
