[Meme] 15 questions about my fics

Nov 11, 2010 02:57

I am avoiding my NaNo by doing random memes -- hooray for procrastination! I snagged this one from askerian and
branchandroot:

1. Which is your favorite fic? Despite having written a lot of stories over the years -- many of which I am quite fond of -- I can easily give you my three very most favorites. They are, in no particular order, "The Way of the Apartment Manager," "Knives," and "Finding Marea: Truth and Change in the Circle of Kemar."

The first is a novel-length OC-centric Naruto fic that starts in a slightly AU pre-manga setting and goes more AU over the course of the story; it is made of heartwarming and adorable. The second is a longish Harry Potter oneshot set after an alternate Book 7, wherein Ginny semi-accidentally captures Lucius Malfoy and tortures him in secret for several years while simultaneously starting a romantic relationship with Harry. The third is original fiction, dealing with questions of truth, change, faith, and the nature of stories as refracted through the lens of a fictional goddess-centric religion and one woman's attempt to analyze one of their sacred tales.

2. Which is your best-received fic? Either "Definitions of Romance" or "The Way of the Apartment Manager." Yes, still.

3. Which is your worst-received fic? Worst-received in the sense of people actively disliking it? Hmm. "Knives," I guess; the ending annoyed some people. The final chapter of "Tides" also annoyed some people, because I got too self-indulgent with chakra theory and didn't put in enough plot and character stuff.

Worst-received in the sense of nobody caring? "Wings To Fly," though at least the person I wrote it for liked it. *wry* Hey, when you write for obscure nonexistent fandoms outside of Yuletide, complete silence is pretty much par for the course.

4. Which is your angstiest fic? Hmm. I think I have to go with "Lies," which is, in retrospect, pretty much me giving Ginny a type of clinical depression similar to my own, though constant rather than periodic, and watching how she reacted. Also my two world-building ficlets about the realities of the hidden village ninja culture: "Traps" and "Children's Crusade." And "Quietus," from "Fixation, and Other Stories," which is basically a description of a hopeless war and how Remus Lupin decides to commit assisted suicide. A bunch of my fics have angsty elements, but not so unrelieved as those four, and while another bunch are disturbing, there's a difference between dark!fic and angst!fic, you know?

5. Which is your funniest fic? Either "Just Killing Time" or "How Team Seven Got Their Summon Animals" -- well, I think they're funny, anyway. Also "Minor Considerations," because Jareth is a doofus, and "Tentacle Porn," because Ginny and Hermione talking about the title subject (at least in hypothetical terms) will never not be hilarious. *grin*

6. Smuttiest? The answer to this will probably always be "Parseltongue," because basically I do not write smut, and this is a fic in which people use live snakes as aids to foreplay. (So it wins for kinkiest, too.)

7. Fluffiest? "The Way of the Apartment Manager" is pretty fluffy overall, but that's mixed in with an action/adventure plot, so I don't think it really counts. Therefore, I will go with "Compatibility," which is, despite the potential insect squick, sweet enough to rot your teeth. The sections of "Fixation, and Other Stories" wherein Harry, Ginny, and Draco play Quidditch (either on their own or with their children) are also pretty adorable.

8. Have you ever made someone cry with a fic? I dunno, maybe? I don't remember reviews in enough detail to say for sure.

9. Which fic frustrates you the most? Whichever one I am currently trying and failing to write!

10. Which fic was the most fun to write? They're all fun when they're working. *grin* If I were forced to pick one at gunpoint, though, it would probably be "The Way of the Apartment Manager," which, considering its sheer length, gave me ridiculously little trouble and tended to make me go all fuzzy inside, even though I was the one pulling all the emotional strings and therefore logically ought to have been immune to the effect.

11. Who is your favorite OC you've ever created? The obvious answer would be Ayakawa Yukiko, from "The Way of the Apartment Manager," but that is not actually true. I am, in truth, more fond of Ginny's OC classmates from "Secrets" -- most especially Apple Rumluck and Xanthe Delaflor. I think my favoritism shows through at times, which mars the story somewhat. *is sheepish* (I also really like the OCs from "Intervention" -- my unfinished Star Trek: AOS story about a Red Cross starship, a colony plague, and a pirate invasion -- but it would be cheating to pick characters whose story nobody has read yet.)

12. Are you better at oneshots or multiparts? Hell if I know. I like writing oneshots because they are contained and tend to be tighter and better edited and... punchier, I guess, than multiparts. On the other hand, multiparts give me the space to say things I have to trim out of oneshots, and I do tend to run on at the mouth. On the third hand, I don't post oneshots until they're done, so even if they hang over my head, they aren't out in public making people post annoying reviews asking when the next chapter will be up... but that's a failing of time-management on my part, not an inherent flaw in multipart stories. Bah.

13. What character do you think you're the best at portraying? Beats me.

14. What character is the most difficult to portray? The ones I don't write a lot, obviously!

15. Tag five other authors! Oh, if you want to play and haven't played yet, consider yourself tagged -- I cannot be bothered to pick actual names. *is lazy*

I may come back and add links to the story titles at some point, but I may just as well not. See above re: lazy.
