stuff done: Sunday-Monday

May 08, 2017 23:10

1. Attended church, which was a special service with sermon and music by Samite Mulondo, the founder of Musicians for World Harmony.

2. Coffee hour cleanup.

3. Made my weekly Facebook update post.

4. Changed linens. Given the weather, I decided NOT to do the winter-to-summer swap. (I want spring back!)

5. Cut up a cardboard box (which originally held my new clothes drying rack) to make a base for my AC to rest on in the winter. I'd been using a flattened printer paper box lid, which was not really satisfactory.

6. Took recycling bins to the curb for pickup.

7. Laundry! Which I did Monday morning instead of Sunday afternoon, because on Sunday it rained all day long. I have actually put all but the air-drying items away, which is more efficiency than I often manage.

8. Applied fertilizer to my vegetables (and a few of my houseplants while I was at it).

9. Photographed my vegetables and made my weekly post about them.

10. Certified last week's unemployment benefits. Alas, that was the last week for which I was allowed to collect them, since they're only available for one year. I may be allowed to start a new claim based on my lack of work from H&R Block, but given that that wasn't a full-time job and I'm still working ~27 hours a week at the rental office, I doubt such a claim would be accepted. I may try anyway; there's certainly no harm in asking.

11. Walked into town to get cash and buy lunch.

12. Emailed TC3 to ask who I should talk to about AA degree requirements, how many of my previous college credits would transfer, and what my best options are. Hopefully I will get a response within a few days.

13. Made a preliminary grocery list. (I will probably add a couple more things before I actually go shopping on Thursday or Friday.)

14. Prepped ingredients for a batch of fajita filling, which I will cook tomorrow night after work.

15. Sliced up and baked two chicken thighs in balsamic dressing, for general protein snacks and possibly adding to pasta.

16. Took all resulting compost to the communal bin.

17. Made some writing progress on the insert scene in "Second Chances" and some editing progress on the rest of the story.

18. I seem to have forgotten to mention this in my last few 'stuff done' posts, perhaps because it hasn't been on any of my to-do lists? Well, anyway, I have been reading (in bits and pieces, between other things) the Memoirs of Lady Trent series. I ended up starting with book two, The Tropic of Serpents, because I had to order book one via interlibrary loan and I am impatient. I then moved right on to book three, The Voyage of the Basilisk, which I just finished tonight.

They are fun books! I wouldn't call them deep literature, but they are a pleasure to read -- both in terms of the characters and plots, in terms of the worldbuilding (which is genuine world-building rather than region-building, and thought-out to a degree more writers should aspire to), and in terms of the actual writing, which manages to be smoothly invisible in service of the story despite having a distinctive first-person narrative voice. That is a neat trick, and I wish I could pinpoint how Brennan pulls it off.

Anyway, I have jumped back to start book one, A Natural History of Dragons, and I expect I'll make some reasonable progress on that during slow periods at work tomorrow. :)
