Summary: He wants to hate her, but he can't. Response to cupcakemonster's Kittens Have Claws.
It hurts and his jaw hurts and Baralai's soft touch hurts and crying hurts and Baralai's patience hurts, and then he's angry, and Baralai leaves the room (always clever like that). So he wallows in self pity for a while, and then he lets Baralai talk him out of it.
And then he's a man with a mission, isn't he? He leaves Bevelle and Baralai, not for long, no, not for long; he'll be back. He makes promises to Baralai and promises to himself and then he makes his way to Besaid and talks Yuna into helping Rikku.
He wants to hate Rikku, now. Because she keeps turning his world upside down. From friends to lovers to on-off-fling. From out of reach to something to cling to, right the way to something to love/hate. And she made him admit things about himself, publicly, that he was never even going to think about too much. And she stole the desert from him with the happy-bitter-sweet memories, and she made him break machina.
At the same time, he still wants to love her. Because she's always been a handful like that anyway. Because somehow she led him (pushed him?) all the way to 'Lai (even though she didn't mean to), and he loves 'Lai, even if it makes him half gay. He can even say the word now.
Most of all, he wants to be friends, so he gets Yuna to go after Rikku and he goes back to Bevelle, to Baralai, to wait.
