Summary: The wounds still haven't healed, but it'll only take time.
Notes: Apparently I am working my way up the scale here. I have at least managed to get David and Rush in the same bed, now.

Dave wakes in the night, aching, his face wet -- the wound is still raw, even now, still --

"Dave?" Rush mumbles, beside him, and the pain dissolves and David turns in the circle of Rush's arms, presses close to him to feel the warmth and life of him, the hum of his blood and the soft sound of his breathing. Rush grumbles, still mostly asleep, but his arms tighten around David. "S'okay," he whispers, after a few minutes, when he's a bit more awake -- and David smiles, relieved beyond words, because Rush is here, really here.

"Sorry," he says, into Rush's shoulder. Rush's fingers slide through his hair, gentle.

"No, it's okay. Shouldn't have left you, Dave."

David laughs, then, pulling back to look at Rush's face in the dimness. Is it the growing dawn outside that limns Rush's body in light, or is it his power, he wonders? He shakes his head. "You 'left me' so you could save everyone, Rush. I can hardly blame you for that."

Rush squirms closer. "Yeah, but I should've thought of some other way," he says -- as if it could have been that easy. David holds him tightly, wondering if he'll ever have the words for how he's blessed.

"I'm alright."

"Liar," Rush says. He brushes a kiss over David's collarbone, just because it's there. "You will be, though. Now I'm here."

"Yes," David says, softly. "Now you're here."

Rush shifts, draping a leg tangled in covers over David's legs, settling himself so David feels his breath on his shoulder. "Go back to sleep," Rush says, once they're thoroughly entangled. "And I swear, I'm going to lose all sympathy if you wake me up in the night again."

"I won't," David promises, holding back his laughter. He wonders if Rush does this by instinct or design, the way he knows just how to settle David, just how to make everything alright.

Rush prods him in the ribs. "Sleep!"

David turns and buries his face in Rush's unkempt hair, closes his eyes and breathes in the scent of him. "Alright," he whispers.

Rush is, somehow, already asleep.
