F: Something For Everyone

Dec 24, 2009 01:52

Fandom: Firefly
Main characters: Mal, Inara
Referenced characters: Kaylee
Pairings: Implied Mal/Inara
Contains: N/a
Rating: G
Summary: Some of the more popular traditions from Earth-that-was survive still.
Notes: Inara and Mal are irritating and won't do as they told. Still, I hope you enjoy it. Happy Christmas, misura.

"I thought you would ignore the holiday entirely," Inara says. If she let much emotion past that Companion-y mask of hers, Mal thinks she'd be smiling bemusedly. "Given its origins."

Mal adjusts the big white beard and the red hat, raising his eyebrows. "Does it suit me?"

"Very becoming," Inara says, dry as a desert. "Kaylee's going to love it."

He's glad for the big stupid beard, hiding his mouth. Inara might notice that he's smiling, then. He can feel the way she's looking at him -- surprised, analysing, and he can almost see the thought ticking through her head, the way he constantly surprises her. Which is just dandy, 'cause he'd like to think he's not predictable. "Yeah, she is, isn't she?"

"So what is Santa bringing Kaylee for Christmas?"

"Santa is bringing everyone something for Christmas," Mal says, and reaches into the 'sack' -- okay, not quite a sack, not like the traditional illustrations from Earth-that-was, but it's the closest approximation he could find. "Here," he says, and pushes a box into her hand. He's turning away before she can give him any kind of look -- any kind of wiles.

"Mal," she says, softly. He turns back, raises an eyebrow, because he'd look rude and stupid, giving her a present and then just walking away. "Happy Christmas."

He doesn't know if that's a relief or not. "Happy Christmas, Inara," he says, and then turns away quickly again. Kaylee's gonna love this.
