Summary: When he was in Chicago, he felt the longing as an itch in his feet. For fic_on_demand.

When he was in Chicago, he felt it as an itch in his feet -- something that might pull him, variously, depending on the day, to walk toward Canada, or -- more fruitfully -- toward Ray's apartment. He reprimands himself for it now: he can't have both. It's either Chicago and Ray -- both of them -- or Canada and the clean, easy solitary life.

He'd never have thought there'd be any contest.

Here, it isn't itchy feet. It's a craving, a hurt in his stomach like he hasn't been eating, a stupid craving for pizza (the perfect pizza, at the perfect price). It's the need to call Kowalski up and talk to him, or call the Vecchios' house and talk to whoever picked up, arrange a time to talk to Ray. It's the way he just sits there, idle when there's a million things to do.

He isn't sure whether Diefenbaker is actually missing Chicago, or just missing the constant stream of snacks and new, interesting smells. But either way, sometimes they share their longing, sitting together on the wooden floor of their cabin, and Fraser talks to Diefenbaker, to the silence, to Ray's absence, about everything that comes to mind.

Normally, he would worry he was going mad, but it seems somehow logical now -- and less mad, in any case, than talking to his dead father.

It's what propels him out, propels him to arrange a flight.
