Summary: Rosa and Kain have an awkward conversation. For first_seventhe, the third part of my trio of awesome, and wonderfully supportive and lovely lately.
"We haven't seen you for a while," Rosa says, gently. She doesn't miss the way Kain's back stiffens before he turns to look at her.
"Rosa," he says, quietly, and there's a world of self-reproach, there in his eyes, before he pushes it aside. "I was training, but I didn't think you would all forgive me if I missed yet another event."
"I think you're wrong there, but it's good to see you anyway." She smiles at him, putting her hand on his arm. "Cecil and I have missed you. But don't come back before you're ready. I can imagine how hard it will be."
Kain's smile doesn't reach his eyes. He takes her hand, brushes a kiss over her fingertips -- a kiss that feels like a farewell, or a promise, or both in one. "No, you can't. But I will come back, someday."
"I'll tell Cecil you were here. He's been worried."
"I should probably talk to him myself."
"He'll understand if you don't," she says, gently, and lays her hand on his arm just one more time before she turns and walks away. She doesn't look back at him.
