"I'll be taking my leave tomorrow," Balthier said, softly. Ashe barely looked at him, but looked down, out at her city, kept her eyes on something else. "I won't be back in Dalmasca for some time, I think."
"Good riddance," she said, calmly, but not sincerely enough. The sky pirate just laughed.
"I'm hurt. It's not my fault you're royalty and I'm a rootless sky pirate, you know. I'd offer to take you away with me, but I fear your kingdom needs you."
"I wasn't entertaining any thought of going with you," she snapped. Balthier stayed silent for a moment and then turned to her -- and she couldn't help but look up and be caught by his eyes, his surprisingly serious expression.
"I would have one thing of you, before I go."
"And what would that be?"
He smiled, and there was a look of mischief in his eyes then. "A kiss."
She knew, of course, what the smart thing to do would be. The practical thing. But instead she turned to face him and took a step toward him -- because she would have one thing for herself out of all this, one thing just for herself and not for her people, one selfish, silly thing.
"I won't ever stay, you know," Balthier said, more serious again, but he didn't move away. Ashe closed her eyes, took another step, lifted her head so that her mouth was inches from his.
"You can always visit, though."
