"You're going, aren't you?"
Gippal glanced back over his shoulder. Rikku looked as if she'd just got out of bed, her hair more tousled than usual, her expression sleepy and yet still sharp with worry. Inwardly, he winced. He hoped she wasn't planning on pouncing or something to keep him from leaving -- she wasn't heavy, but she was incredibly bony. "Yes," he said, and turned away again.
Her tone sharpened a little more. "And you think you're going to get away with not saying a proper goodbye?"
"Probably not, since you're coming after me." He huffed out a sigh and turned to look at her again. "Come on, then, princess."
She made a face at him and ran over, wrapping her skinny arms around him, holding him so tightly he almost eeped. "You'd better be careful," she said, and then she kissed him -- just a brush of lips, really, for barely more than a heartbeat, lighter than a breath. Then she was pulling back, pulling out of his arms and giving him a look. "Promise?"
"Promise," he said, feeling vaguely dazed. She nodded firmly and then ran back, almost right inside. She turned at the last minute, raising an arm and waving.
He waved back. Then she was going inside, disappearing from sight, and it really hit home. He was leaving. His stomach twisted. He almost wanted to run after her, say he'd stay. Kiss her again.
"You're the one who wanted to join the Crimson Squad, Gippal," he muttered, to himself, and taking a deep breath, turned.
