Barney was his brother. It wasn't like he'd forgotten that. He knew it damned well -- hated the way he came to see Barney in a different way, with his sweet face and his clever hands and his soft pale hair. He hated the way he caught himself looking at Barney sometimes, hated the way he had to fight the urge to pin him up against him and kiss him, hard and fierce and sweet. He hated the way he wanted to touch him. He hated the dreams he had sometimes, the ones where he touched Barney and Barney touched him back.
Simon was pretty sure he was the worst brother in the whole world.
When he woke one night from one of those dreams, hot as if with fever, Barney's bed was empty. It wasn't morning -- not even nearly. He sat up, slowly, and realised that Barney was right there -- perched on the end of his bed. Swallowing, he gathered his covers round him. "Barney?"
"Sorry," Barney said, and his cheeks were bright pink. "Did I wake you?"
"What're you doing out of bed?"
"I was -- " Barney hesitated, and then suddenly moved up, moved to sit on the edge of the bed right next to Simon. Simon swallowed hard again -- Barney was so close he could feel his breath on his face, could've sworn he felt the warmth of Barney's body close to his despite the space and duvet between them.
"Barney?" he said, softly. In the soft darkness his brother looked almost a stranger -- his expression soft, almost tender, his hair tousled, his lips faintly parted. Simon suddenly wanted to kiss him so much it was like a physical ache.
"If you hate this, I'll pretend in the morning you were dreaming and act really freaked out if you mention it," Barney muttered, and then suddenly he kissed him -- he kissed Simon, and Simon could barely respond from the shock. He got his act together in time, though, placing his hand on the back of Barney's neck and keeping him close.
"Barney -- "
"Don't tell me it's stupid and wrong," Barney said, quickly. Simon shook his head. He had no words at all. He just kissed Barney again, hoping that was eloquent enough.
For something so wrong, so stupid, it felt so perfectly right.
