"It's alright," Zell said, his voice hoarse. He tried to push up, tried to push his way out of the rubble to get a view of the scene around. His arm buckled under him and he sprawled again on the cold stone. Xu barely moved: she moaned softly in pain, rasping for breath. He cursed softly to himself, holding still for a moment and waiting for the throbbing pains to fade. Then, laboriously, he got up and crawled over to her. He fumbled a potion out of his pocket with fingers gone numb, trickled it into her mouth.

She stirred a little.

"That's right," he said, softly. "Don't leave me alone out here."

"How...?"

"I don't know," he said, anticipating the question. He eased himself down to lay at her side, taking her hand in his. "She's been casting some pretty huge spells. Like fireworks. I haven't heard anyone close to here. I think we're too near her..."

"The others?"

"Gone," Zell said, as flatly as he could.

"Leave me," Xu said, after five minutes of a silence so loud it hurt.

"Like hell," Zell said, and then, more practically, "I can't, anyway. I can barely move."

There was a noise somewhere closeby, a detonation. Zell flinched. Xu didn't have enough energy to flinch.

"What the hell...?"

"The final assault," Xu said, smiling grimly. She closed her eyes. Zell tightened his grip on her hand.
