Summary: Teaching Vaan to fly. For
shunka_shuutou, on my
request meme.
"No, you -- " Balthier broke off and took a deep breath, gripping the controls tightly as he took the Strahl out of danger again. Penelo might have been giggling. Vaan wasn't looking terribly apologetic.
"Sorry," he said, with a grin that showed all his teeth. "Forgot."
"Forgot? This is my ship, my -- " he broke off again when he heard Penelo's giggle, looking towards her and Fran at the other seat, and then narrowing his eyes suspiciously at the look on his partner's face. "Fran, are you laughing at me too?"
"Would she do such a thing?" Penelo asked, but she was still laughing, her hand over her mouth.
"I would not," Fran said, with such remarkable calm that it sent Penelo off into another jag of laughter. "Balthier, perhaps you are unduly concerned by things that matter not. I believe Vaan would be a better pilot if you took a step back and let him fly for himself. We will not crash."
"Yeah!" Vaan looked up and made a face at Balthier, jerking the controls in a way that made him blanch and caused a flicker of amusement on Fran's face. "I've been dreaming of this ever since I remember! Let me try it."
Balthier muttered something, darkly. One might have suspected that it were something not heard in polite company, if it had been anyone else who said it. It made Fran smile again, though the humans didn't hear.
"He has been, you know," Penelo said, quietly. She was watching Vaan, who was paying attention by then: his hands where they were supposed to be, his eyes mostly ahead, but darting around to check instruments, check the sky around them. His eyes were wide with wonder, his face split into a smile of joy -- he was flying, really and truly. "He's always wanted a chance to... spread his wings."
"There are no better wings than these," Balthier said, quietly, and when Vaan almost swerved the wrong way and into something, he didn't move to take control, though his hands clenched into fists. Only Fran noticed the knowing on his face.
