Summary: Will told Bran something he really didn't want to hear. For fic_on_demand.

"I have to go away," Will said. He said it into the silence in the middle of a phone call, as if all the small talk had led up to it, and it was so sudden that Bran felt as if he couldn't breathe. Which was stupid, he told himself, stupid -- Will could call, write letters... it wouldn't be the end. But something in Will's voice had said it was, and Bran's heart was beating far too fast.

"Go away where?" he asked, and oh, he tried to keep it casual. "How long will you be gone?"

He heard Will take a breath, heard him let it out, heard him take another. "I probably won't be coming back."

"Will -- "

"So that's why..." Will's voice was heavy with sadness, and perhaps that's why Bran stayed silent to listen. "That's why I'll probably never speak to you again. Don't -- don't take it to heart. You're a good friend. I'll miss you."

"Don't say things like that, Stanton," Bran said, and there was something welling up his throat and he had to swallow hard. "Don't you dare say goodbye. You're my best friend."

"I'm sorry," he said, quietly. "I won't say goodbye, then. Just... take care, Bran."

Bran was about to say something else when he heard Will put the phone down. Click, just like that, and he was gone.

"Bastard," he said, into the phone, though Will had gone. He squeezed his eyes shut tightly, but it didn't stop the tears escaping, spilling out and running down his cheeks. He wiped them away angrily, slamming the phone down into its cradle. "Bastard," he whispered again, and very deliberately reached up and tipped the photograph of Will over onto its face, so that he really would never see him again.
