Summary: The desire to kiss Riku came and went. For
candywrapper.
The first time he thought about kissing Riku was when they were still kids, of course. It was mainly just because he wanted to know what it was like, and because there was still a vague feeling amongst the boys that girls had, well, cooties. Of course, Kairi would have pouted or slapped him if he'd said such a thing -- it was more likely to be the former, which was actually worse in Sora's eyes.
Of course, kissing in general meant cooties and Sora was more interested in fights with a wooden sword than kisses.
The second time was somewhat later, and it was just because they were close, he thought. He felt the same way about Kairi at that point -- it felt like something natural, something expected. Girls didn't quite mean cooties anymore and kissing was starting to hold an honest attraction for him, but... but... He couldn't kiss Riku, he was his best friend, and he couldn't kiss Kairi because -- well, he just couldn't. Besides, Riku would've been jealous if he'd kissed Kairi.
And even then he didn't consider the idea of kissing anyone else.
The next time was one of the things Sora will never remember. It was in Castle Oblivion, of course, his memories gradually trickling away and being replaced -- and sometime before the memories of happy, loving times all morphed into Naminé, he remembered how he'd wanted to kiss Riku. When you have few real memories left, the few that remain become somehow stronger. Or something. Sora didn't really bother about thinking it, but he did think that if he saw Riku again, he'd kiss him -- just to see what it really was like.
There wasn't much kissing involved in being the keyblade master, after all. Except kisses on the cheek for luck, and those had only happened once or twice anyway and he'd always made a face and swiftly wiped his cheek.
The fourth time didn't come until they were back on Destiny Island. Barely back, it was true, and something about being alone together like that had brought the old feelings right back to the fore where they stayed, stronger than ever. He and Riku were laying together on the beach -- on their backs, looking up at the bright, bright sky, and there was nothing of darkness in any of it. Kairi was off with Selphie, re-exploring the old island, and in the quiet warmth Riku reached out and took his hand and squeezed tight.
That felt really right somehow, so Sora grinned and squeezed back, but his bare feet were half-buried in the sand and he was really comfortable, so he didn't move to kiss Riku then.
It was that evening when they decided to check out the secret place. It was a squeeze to get in at the narrow entrance now, though it got better further in, and Sora hadn't realised quite how much he'd grown. He didn't particularly relish the thought of trying to get out again. He and Riku sat together in the dark, looking at the chalk pictures.
"Maybe we should have asked Kairi to come," Riku said, thoughtfully. His eyes slid over the drawings on the wall and rested on the pictures of Sora and Kairi giving each other a paopu fruit. Sora scowled a little and shifted to block Riku from looking at it. He wanted to kiss Riku then, to distract him, but it wasn't the right time somehow.
"She was having fun with Selphie."
"You're acting like you didn't want her to come," Riku said, laughter sparkling in his eyes. And then Sora kissed him, and -- and it was surprisingly good, so he did it again, and forgot all about the awkward crouch he was in and the sand between his toes and the stone digging into his foot and instead could only think of Riku's fingers tangled in his hair, Riku's mouth soft and warm against his.
