Summary: Seifer is jealous of Squall. Timeline
here.
Balamb town, post war. It's as sleepy as it ever was, and it hasn't developed any. It's six months since the war and Seifer stands there feeling both at home and very, very alien. There was a time when in a murderous rage he would have razed this town to the ground, and now he stands there knowing that he would have regretted it lifelong -- if he ever got free of his sorceress to have any feelings of his own, that is -- if he had managed to do such a thing. They all hate him anyway -- even the ones that knew him well before.
He thought they would all understand what happened to him, but it's obvious by now that nobody does. Even Raijin and Fujin are wary, wary in a way that stings his heart even though he can't really blame them. They were, after all, closest to his apparent madness. He's only thankful, really, that they never left his side, not until there was no choice for them and they knew that no magic would bring him back.
So, here he is.
Balamb town, sleepy as ever except for where he stands, where it is wary. And except for where Squall stands, near the train station, bidding a noticeably strained goodbye to Rinoa. Seifer isn't sure if he wishes them well or hates the very idea. He does know that Rinoa isn't really Squall's type, but also knows that Squall has a strong sense of duty and that Rinoa would be something that he had to do.
He hoped, of course, that Squall had a little more sense than that.
The thing that really bothered him was that he knew Squall had the best part of all this. Of course, that is the way things always pan out: he wasn't really expecting anything different and the way he's treated now doesn't come as a surprise to him. But still -- somehow, he'd dared to hope for better.
He doesn’t know why.
He hates that he’s actually, or at least a little, jealous of Squall. He gets the girl and the adoration and Seifer gets fuck all for all his pains. Both of them went through a lot, sure, but last time Seifer noticed Squall hadn’t been tormented by a cruel and doubtlessly sadistic sorceress for the duration of the conflict.
What’s torture and a few wounds to that?
Squall doesn’t see him. But he follows his progress easily enough through the town of Balamb, watching people adore him -- watching the old weapon maker who’d known them both from the first day they picked up their weapons eye him with love and then cast a resentful stare at Seifer.
Yeah, he’s jealous of Squall. And that doesn’t change the one other thing that sticks in the throat today -- he still wants Squall, just as he used to when they were both just students who fought every day and not mortal enemies.
