Summary: River always goes to Simon. For

Serenity was a warm place, most of the time. River felt comfortable in just her dress and her bare feet, so she could feel the vague bite of the black's cold through the metal and so appreciate the warmth of Serenity more, and so she could feel and listen to the beating heart of Serenity, the steady hum and thrum of the engine when it worked well. And the clangs and the jangling rhythm of Serenity on a bad day.
That was most of the time, though. Sometimes, when Zoe and Wash had argued or Mal had upset Kaylee or Jayne had said something to somebody that made dinner an exercise in slow freezing, River didn't want her bare feet on the floors, didn't want to feel Serenity's heart straining.
Those times, she'd make her way to Simon. Wherever he was. Even in the infirmary, because he was a bright spot of warmth just because he loved so terribly achingly much. He'd hold her close and she could focus on his heart, instead -- the way it ached and the way it quickened as she pressed closer to him, snuggling into his welcoming embrace. She'd listen, then, to his heart, beating independently from everyone else's.
"Is something wrong, River?" he'd ask, his arms squeezing around her a little, holding her closer and warming her up, his nose in her hair smelling her shampoo and a hint of Inara's incense and Kaylee's girly perfume, from the time she'd spent with them. She'd snuggle against him then, feeling like a caterpillar curling into a chrysalis to become a bright and beautiful butterfly someday.
"Nothing's wrong now," she'd tell him, resting her head against his chest to better hear the beat. And she would stay there, warm and safe, until Serenity's heart resumed its normal sedate beat.
