Summary: Seifer and Squall stay out late. Kidfic. For
30_fantasies.
The dark-haired woman shades her eyes as she straightens up, giving Selphie a gentle push into the house, and she frowns as she looks for the two missing kids. The ones who almost always come in last, hot and tired and dirty, having fought and played and had fun all day.
She's happy for them, but she worries for them too.
Today the sun was like a fireball in the sky, scorching hot, and the other children played in the waves near the Orphanage under Edea's watchful eye, with Quistis sitting in the shade most of the time and looking disapproving, Ellone at her side, quiet and collected as always. But not Seifer and Squall. They'd stolen off almost as soon as they'd finished breakfast, had come back to snatch a bite of lunch and then gone again.
She wonders what they did all day, and sighs softly at the knowledge that they'd probably been fighting. She could bet her life on it that when they went to Garden they'd fight harder and probably hurt each other, because they would go to Garden, they'd said so, told her over and over again that they were going to learn to fight.
Edea wonders for a moment if Seifer is really good for Squall, but Squall attaches himself to people and wouldn't let go; Ellone and Seifer, the two people in Squall's life he just won't be separated from. She can't count the times she's caught Squall curled up in Ellone's or Seifer's bed on a morning.
Seifer drags home, dragging his feet through the hot sand, because he doesn't want to go in. Squall is at his side, as always, looking up at him, prepared to do anything, prepared to run away if Seifer asks it.
Edea calls to them. "Come here, boys! Hurry up!"
Squall looks about to run towards her, but Seifer grabs his hand and he stops instantly, walking at Seifer's pace. Seifer is sunburnt, the skin already peeling off the tip of his nose, and Edea sighs as she pushes them gently into the house to find soothing aftersun lotion and some dinner for them both.
She's sure Seifer is going to go through his life fighting, and if their childhood is any indication, Squall will follow him, willingly, no matter what.
