Popular Music

Last summer I woke up and the dial on my clock radio shifted. I was lying in bed hearing odd music for what I thought would be NPR, and then I realized for some reason my radio was set to 88.9 WERS. I heard some great tunes that morning, one I even downloaded. It was called "Such Great Heights" by Postal Service. I heard it on The River a few times later, and I was expecting it to be the next big hit, but it never was. Then again, what do I know about popular music? Jackie is laughing herself to sleep at the moment I bet. Tonight I heard the song as part of the soundtrack to a great great movie I saw, Garden State. I think it's this year's Lost in Translation, only better.

There's a certain cityscape that was noticeable in the New Jersey neighborhoods during the movie. It was very similar to some of the more central neighborhoods in Manchester, maybe even the neighborhood I live in now. I'm picturing the scenes at Sam's house, in her backyard burying her hamster. Congested, yet peaceful. Old, yet comfortable. Autumn, yet not cold, but certainly not warm. I could relate. I also think it spoke for our generation and our overwhelmingly popular desire not to grow up too soon. I won't get into the plot too much more, but the development of that Zach Braff character is definitely admirable, and one that I bet a lot of people our age can relate to, or will relate to shortly.
