I was thinking about the recent futility of the Lions and the seemingly-past stretch of bad years for the Tigers. Here's what I came up with:
I'll spare you the math I was going to include, but since it's not that difficult, I'll just go by the numbers:
24: number of wins the Lions accrued from 2001-2006 (the first 6 seasons of Matt Millen's tenure as GM)
96: number of games played in that span
0: number of times Detroit's been anywhere near the playoffs in that span
.250: overall winning percentage during that span
Just how bad is that? Let's compare with another sport that's a little more statistics-ified: baseball.
If a MLB team won just 25% of its games, it would have a record of 41-121 (that's being generous by half a win). Context? No team in baseball has EVER lost that many games. Okay, so the Tigers managed to lose 119 in 2003, but that was only the worst season in a stretch of bad ones. The Lions have been worse than that in half the years of Millen's tenure. If a baseball team lost 121 games once they would (a) be remembered for all eternity as the worst ever and (b) dismantled, starting with the front office.
Do I really need to say it again? FIRE MILLEN.
