News times!
Started working on a new novel the other day. This makes... oh, about my third. There's just something great about being able to walk up to people and boast "I've written two novels, and I'm working on a third", although it's not so great when they say "Oh? What's the title?" and then you look a bit sheepish and mutter, "Well, I'm not actually published yet..."
But that's okay. As you all on my f-list might know (and if you don't, where have you been?) that my two favorite authors are Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman. And I've learned quite a bit from these two.
First - Terry Pratchett taught me that it's perfectly possible to write an entire novel writing only 400 words a day. That's my new goal for myself - 400 words a day. It's a small enough chunk that I can write it my shiny new notebook whenever I get a chance to sit down and write.
Second - Neil Gaiman taught me that it's perfectly acceptable to use language that's coarse, maybe even crude. Language doesn't have to be pretty and shiny to make a good story.
Third - Both Neil and Terry have taught me that it's entirely possible to take yourself and your writing far too seriously, and if you just sit back and have fun, your story is a lot more fun too.
And last - there is no object too mundane, no event too ordinary, to be made into a story.
The new novel is called Witching Hour, and I hope I get to share it with some of you guys. :3
