It gets better - we've made a pact to continue tonight, and... I spent a good chunk of last night looking up mountaineering terms, names of minerals and various gemstones, and I'm going to spend a good chunk of today coming up with ways to pun them.
I was on a roll last night. After my friend had gone to bed, I was talking to another friend I mentioned I'd made a file titled "The Pun File" which I kept reading as "The Fun Pile" and she said something about a 'fun pile' on the Enterprise...
...to which I replied, "I have no comet, but if it's something you really want to do, you should planet."
I owe it all to my grandfather, who has the remarkable ability to take just about anything and turn it into a pun/corny joke.
It takes a lot of practice, a lot of trial and error, and a lot of knowing your audience.
Silly stuff like this notwithstanding, I spend far more time working on my comedic pieces of writing than I do on serious pieces. I will honestly sit and agonize over a joke for a couple of days if I think it sounds like it's falling flat or doesn't fit, but then if I work on it too much I destroy it altogether, and the worst part is, there's no big set list of guidelines saying "THIS IS FUNNY" and "THIS IS NOT FUNNY".
Like everything, it gets better with practice, so keep working on it. :)

I've never been able to be funny consistently.
