"Mud" is technically called joint compound, and using it to bed drywall tape is a tricky business, as we found out while doing our bathroom. If there are bubbles in the mud, if it isn't smoothed out evenly, or you put too much or too little on, you've got problems that can involve a lot of work to fix.
We actually covered the entire wall area with mud to smooth everything out, but that's more than most people do.
