I was driving back home during the time schools are let out and was passing by a middle school located off the side of the busy street I was on. Suddenly I saw a kid on the opposite side of the street getting ready to leap in front of my car. I saw them do this to the car in front of me, but now that I saw a close up of what was happening, it was clear these kids were intentionally throwing themselves out into oncoming traffic as a game. It's like they were playing chicken in traffic. It was so senseless, reckless, and the irresponsibility of the school bothered me so much I turned my car around and marched straight into the school's office and demanded they pull those kids off the street immediately.
If I didn't have a kid of my own, I would have probably just passed on by and just shook my head at those dumb kids. But now as a parent, and knowing how kids just don't think about consequences I just couldn't turn the other way. How would I feel if someone could have saved my kid from getting killed by a car but didn't because it was too inconvenient? Kids do dumb things all the time, and it's up to the adults to make sure that the kids don't get themselves killed. I can't believe that school, being located right smack on a heavy traffic street, would allow their young students be let loose like wild animals on the outside of their school grounds WITHOUT supervision!! No crossing guards, no nothing! Nothing to ensure their safety...... that they won't be run over by the heavy traffic only a few feet from the school's front door. Not everyone obeys the 20 mph speed limit, nor are they looking out for young children playing in the street.
I've seen children die in the hospital. It's heartbreaking, especially since most of these deaths could have been prevented if someone just had a little foresight, an ounce of prevention, an ounce of kindness.
