Two weeks ago,
grrliz posted about a non-competitive layout challenge she was considering and I just knew I had to give it a try. I love making layouts, no surprise there, but I never share my code because it's a mess. You see, I make them for myself so I don't really care if it works in multiple browsers or if it's valid, optimum or whatever, I'm always trying to stretch my layout-making abilities but, you know, it's for fun, I never take it seriously.
This challenge is an oportunity to change that because this time I would be doing this layout for other people - it's a scary idea, but I think I can do it, I want to do it, so, um...I'm making LJ a more visually stimulating place -
find out how you can too!
These are the challenge terms I am considering:
- Use an S2 Style other than Flexible Squares or Smooth Sailing I've used FS and SS before but not enough to actually think that not using them is a "challenge" so I'll include Mixit/Expressive because that's the style I use the most. I think I'm going to use Minimalism. :D
- Define font sizes in percentages or ems instead of pixels and points. I use percentages most of the time but I'm not that comfortable with ems so I think I'll work with those.
- Choose a colour scheme from ColourLovers or Kuler. (Post the colour scheme with your layout.) Maybe. I can't say I'm going to use one for sure.
- Use a background image in an area other than the overall page background. Easy cake, I use background for every single thing.
- Manipulate the header so that it appears not as a header but as a sidebar. Maybe. I am fond of top navs and NOT so fond of side ones. Still, but I can't rule out this one since I'm trying new things here.
- Have elements of your layout break outside the box. Hell YES. I can totally picture outside the box with the theme I chose, I don't have anything specific yet but it's a fact.
- Use the grid-based approach. Definitely, I love the idea, and I was thinking about it last week. A grids are something I've never done before.
- Pick your favourite album of all time and create a visual equivalent for one of the songs on that album. It's going to be the entire album, Metaphorical Music. It reminds me of summer anyway, so I'll be using the "season challenge". I guess.
- Use a quotation in a creative way by playing with the meaning of the words and how they relate to typography. YES YES YESSS!! Typography is a MUST!
And there's one personal challenge: Less graphics, more typography.
31 days and counting.
