PERSIMMON COOKIES!!!!abe_lincoln666August 3 2006, 23:57:28 UTC
When I was about 17 or 18 years old, I used to get a lot of odd, temporary jobs from this place in the town where I lived, called "Orange Youth Employment Agency." Typically, when I signed up for a job, they sent me to some church to wash dishes, or to a community paper so I could stick junk mail on people's doors.
One time though, they sent me to this old woman's house, to help her pick persimmons. I still remember the old woman's name, "Nellie Christ"; I remember this, because at the time I had a hard time resisting the temptation to ask her if she was related to Jesus. She had three big, old persimmon trees in her back yard, and she called me over there to pick persimmons several times that year.
Each time, I picked a couple of shopping bags full of persimmons, and she payed me something like $1.65 an hour (minimum wage at the time), and sent me on my way with a huge plate of home-made persimmon cookies.
There was never more than an hour or two's worth of work to do, so even thought he job wasn't a financial success, I still went back each time she called, just to get those delicious persimmon cookies.
I've never had cookies like those before or since.
Nellie's Persimmon Cookies ...abe_lincoln666August 5 2006, 17:56:56 UTC
I think the ones that the old lady made, were kind of like toll-house cookies, except that instead of having chocolate chips and nuts in them, they had chunks of persimmons.
Good luck finding a recipe, those were definitely tastey cookies.
