Blood test?

Hi guys I'm getting a blood test tomorrow and I heard I should fast for 12 HOURS before so that there is no fat in the blood system. This might sound stupid but is binging and purging okay? If I purge it all out and there isn't any food in my "system"? How about chewing and spitting since I won't swallow anything? I realize my question is very dumb ( Read more... )

Are you sure they're not measuring your blood sugar as opposed to "fat" in your blood stream?

Either way, you're going to skew your blood tests if you engage in either of those behaviours.

As a side note: even diet soda will alter your results if you're having your blood glucose measured. If you smoke then it's best to avoid that too.

It's measuring the Cholesterol since it runs in our family. It's 12 now and I just finished my chocolate bar I guess I will have to fast until the test time tomorrow (12 pm) ugh so hard. Thanks

It's good someone's checking your cholesterol. I didn't fast when someone checked my blood cholesterol level, but, yeah, anorexia and high cholesterol are, paradoxically, positively correlated.

It does resolve itself, though, upon some (not even complete) remittance of symtoms/weight gain, happily. I had that hypercholesterolemia secondary to starvation but five years down the line, I no longer do. (Don't actually know the exact timeframe, as I'm terrible about making follow-up appointments on any kind of consistent basis.)

I got the results and immediately assumed the high cholesterol level was due to my somehow digesting more of the food I was b/ping on than I thought, but... no.

Then what was the cause?

I replied to this but it had a link, so I think it got stuck in LJ's spam filter. Let me see if this goes through...

Although anorexics usually have low cholesterol levels, abnormally high levels are not uncommon. Some researchers suspect these abnormally high cholesterol levels are related to the effects of starvation on the liver. Without adequate nutrition, the liver, which both makes and metabolizes cholesterol, is unable to break down cholesterol properly. High cholesterol levels are also thought to be caused by starvation-induced abnormalities in estrogen, thyroid, and other hormones ( ... )

So there's not too much certainty as to the cause, just some educated guesswork, but it's not uncommon.

Wow! How can you have high cholesterol levels if you are barely eating? It makes no sense but very interesting
