Johannson

In spring there will be released an album of, I shit you not, this is absolutely real, Scarlett Sings Tom Waits. I'm not interested in the novelty that will go along with this, how fast will that wear out. I actually think it will be a sweet album.

now the question is, what Tom Waits songs would you like to hear Scarlett Johannson sing the most?
apparently her voice is nice and whispery.

picks for me:
"Christmas Card from a Hooker in Minneapolis" is an obvious given, with the female narrator.
"Who Are You" would be gorgeous.
"Falling Down" would be pretty silly, but I like the idea -- her singing, "Come from St. Petersburg, Scarlett and me..."

I think gender-switching by way of narrators is really touching and lovely in lyrics (like "Christmas Card", or Xiu Xiu's "Hello from Eau Claire", sung by Caralee McElroy) -- so something that's got a specifically male perspective (more so than just saying "she's my baby") like "Johnsburg, Illinois" would be great.

it should be interesting since Tom Waits, like Leonard Cohen, can hold up to covers really well and easily, even though their original basically always trumps the redux (but that's fine).

"You Can Never Hold Back Spring" from the upcoming B-sides box set.

when Waits started writing brand-new jazz standards... pfah! nothing is better.
