Ed stood outside the Ministry offices and breathed in the fresh air happily trying to push out thoughts of returning home to secretly fight with his wife in a nonverbal way and to avoid all the questions that Jul had been berating him with for the past 2 days since she'd been home ( Read more... )

Mac headed outside for much the same reason. It had been a long day and he wanted a bit of fresh air. He saw Ed and sighed. He had a daughter at Hogwarts as Mac recalled, and he was bound to have questions Mac wouldn't be able to answer about just what had happened.

All the same, Mac moved over to him. "Evening, Ed," he greeted as he leaned against the wall next to the man.

Ed gave his familiar half smile while glancing at his old trainer before going back to staring at nothing in particular.

"Hey there old timer." He didn't want to put the man on the spot by just berating him with questions. That wasn't a way to get anywhere, but it was dissapointing that he couldn't find Dumbledore anywhere and was feeling rather in the dark about everything (like he had every day since moving to the obliviator section).

Mac nodded cordially to the other man.

"I'm not that old," he grumbled, though he was smiling. He rather missed having Ed around since he'd quit the Aurors and seeing him now was a pleasant surprise.

"How've you been?"

Ed shrugged warily, "Well you're kinda starting to look it...old man." Delay and stall, fine art forms indeed.

"What are you rounding now, near 700? Can you even keep up with your new staff?" He smirked a bit and pondered what to answer him on 'how he had been' becuase he knew that this avoid tactic would only give him so much time. But he just didn't know what to say anymore about it without seeming like a 3 year old child.

"Very amusing, kiddo," Mac said with a laugh. "And don't think I don't know what you're doing." He grinned and decided to humor the man.

"I am nowhere near 700 and I keep up with my staff quite well, thank you. Now what's on your mind, Ed?"

This shrugging thing was becoming a common occurence.

"Pulled Jul out of school. Having been able to get ahold of Dumbledore. Wife wants me to take early retirment. You can choose." He rubbed his hands over his brows as he tried to push away the headache that any and all of those things could bring about.

Mac nodded. He'd suspected as much, knowing the man and his wife as he did.

"I expect Dumbledore's got his hands quite full at the moment. You've seen the papers, I assume?" He shook his head and sighed.

"I know you want to protect her, Ed," he said quietly, looking over at his old colleague, "but do you really think... Do you think she'll be so much safer outside of Hogwarts?"

"Well..yeah. Tragic that Zak kid. I don't have the heart to tell Jul, she probably knows him." He frowned a bit, he didn't know the kid at all but he just sincerely doubted that a fellow student could kill another. He sighed and ran his hand nervously throug his hair.

"It's not me that you have to really convince here Old Man but two attacks in a month? Yeah...I'm actually a little concerned about..." He waved a hand in the air to try and find the right word but failed, "it all."

Mac nodded his head. "It's all a right mess," he agreed. "I won't say it's not worrisome. But..." He shook his head. "I'll go to Hogwarts myself if I have to, Ed. If that's what it takes. You know I'd sooner die that let anyting happen to your little girl.. to anyone's."

He sighed and rubbed at the bridge of his nose, looking at him seriously for a moment.

"She belongs at Hogwarts, Ed," he said quietly. "She'll be as safe there as anywhere. Safer, even. You have my word on that."

He felt the stubble growing on his chin as he rubbed it in thought, "I hate to think that you're wrong Old Man but without something...anything...I don't know how I'm going to convince Lynn. It's her kid too." He scratched his chin a bit more; really it didn't take much convincing on his part but without something to bring to his wife...

A hand fell onto Mac's shoulder, "I appreciate the thought though.."

"I could talk to her if you like," Mac suggested. "You know I can't talk freely about what we've got planned, but maybe I can at least reassure her a bit."

He wished he could just let the man in on his plans. It would make this all so much easier.

"Merlin no Old Man...if she ever thought I..." His eyes had grown wide thinking about it, "But talking to her...you always eased her a bit..."

Ed realized he was fidgeting with his hands and shoved them into his pockets. "But if you got plans you should definitly let me know... I mean, if there's anything I can do to help.." Ed shrugged, he really hated feeling useless and disconnected.
