home from italy

sarah and i finally got home at like 3 this morning after traveling for a million years from rome. italy was spectacular. i had a marvelous time and the food was so good i may never eat again. that's actually a big lie. sarah and i are going for gormet burgers somewhere in belsize park later tonight. no one's home but me. apparently liz and anna are still in barcelona. sarah and sam are next door. the flat is really strange when it's all empty except for me. it's too quiet.
so rome, right? it was great. sarah, vic, and i wandered around on tuesday by ourselves because kevin rented a vespa. we saw the trevi fountain during the day, the pantheon, the piazza navona, the piazza venizia (the italians have far outdone us with the tomb of the unknown soldier, and the view is spectacular), the piazza de popolo, the angel castle (ahem, angels & demons), i had my photo taken with an actor playing a cardinal in a new pope john paul movie that was filming outside the castle, and the piazza de spagna was a let down because it's being refurbished and there were no flowers. we played with kevin's vespa and i nearly killed myself driving into a parking space to let a bus pass me. i rode it for about twenty seconds, but the pictures are fun. during his vespa travels, kevin went to the vatican and tried to get us tickets to see the pope. he didn't understand the ticket office woman who told him to go somewhere, so he grabbed a passing priest who brought kevin four red pope tickets, so wednesday we got up early and gathered in st. peter's square with thousands of other far more pious people to see the pope drive through the crowd and then give a speech in seven languages (italian, french, english, portugese, spanish, russian, german). it was really good and there are pope pictures too. there were so many pope jokes to be had. some old lady nearly stood on me to see him as he drove by. i think it might have made her day. he blessed us all and extended the blessing to our families and any object we wished to have blessed, so i took that to mean my italian leather handbag and all its contents. now i have holy rasberry glace lipstick and a holy digital camera. and all day i was drinking holy hostel drinking water. anyway, we did the vatican museum and saw the sistine chapel and a tiny percentage of all the stuff the vatican is sitting on. they have unlimited stuff. it just goes on and on, the stuff.  we didn't get a chance to go into st. peter's because the line was too long and sarah and i had to go pick up our stuff from the hostel to catch our plane.
but that was my trip to italy and it was lovely. pictures will appear as soon as i find a way to sort through the nearly 700 photos i took.
