Since being on my own, I've never handed out candy on Halloween. No one trick-or-treats in North Oakland (I had candy on hand the first year I was there), and no kid knew to ring the doorbell to get me down from the 3rd floor on Carson St., so there was never any need.
Knowing that I, as a kid, craved Kit-Kats and Reese's (I also loved, and still love, Mallo Cups, but I know that I am a freak), I bought those. I overbought, though. As of this writing, it's 7:30 and I still possess 40 Kit-Kats and 40 Reese's, plus whatever is in my bowl. Here is where I thought dating a teacher would come in handy -- if I don't give out all the goods, I can just give the rest to her, she can leave them out for her kids, right?
Not so. According to Kelly, it is now against the rules, and possibly illegal, for her to hand out candy in her classroom. While I appreciate the efforts made by the school board/local government to keep teachers from using the leading incentive among youngsters 3-16 (at 17, I think other incentives that I won't mention here take hold), Shut Up, School Board and Local Government. It's Halloween, and I don't want to get fat.
Nor do I want to become the neighborhood "Stranger With Candy."
