I've been slowly brewing an opinion over the issue of ageist commercials that run on all social and television media outlets.
I'm getting right tired of seeing pretty 20 somethings going on adventures, finding fabulous places to eat, driving fast cars, "making a difference", or being romantic. I am not saying I don't understand the marketing techniques behind the images, but I am saying that for all of the fact that people are in love with Cher, Demi Moore, Kathy Griffith, Jane Fonda etc, they don't show those types of people living an exciting life other than attached to the perceptions of their children or grandchildren or major health issues.
The closest positive example has been the Facebook commercials where the kids are clueless to their parent's adventurous and fulfilling life, but then again it is attached to their children's perceptions. Where's the Bing commercial where 40 and overs are looking for a hiking trail or adventure package to Thailand? Where's the images of silly partying people over 50 going to music festivals and dancing like they are crazy happy?
I have to say that my generation is the one that is fighting this image idiocy head on. We are refusing to let life go to our younger counterparts. We are refusing to dress like a mom doing laundry on a late Tuesday afternoon. We are refusing to be that dad going through the drive through with a carload of kids. We are looking at each other and prideful of the fact that we aren't dependent on those medications quite yet. If the younger audience is looking at those gorgeous, active, wild, human and inspiring faces of those over 50 (let me add a couple of men to the mix..Johnny Depp and Sean Penn), why aren't they being portrayed in commercial media as such and why can't the be shown as being interested in each other in our age groups, rather than men going to dinner with women under 30 or women only hanging out with other women our age?
The lense of perception needs to be changed. We have money and we spend it on the same things our younger counterparts do. Respect that you ad people out there!
