Second poem, another one of my Aeneid-inspired poems. At this rate I'll have an entire set, but who knows? Anyway, click the cut!
"Trials and Tribulations"
O great god of war
Give me the heart of Pallas
And the will of Camilla
Let my arrows fly with the accuracy of great Diana
For surely her aim always strikes true
Crossing these seas, I scanned the forces
Outnumbered by far, I still flew into battle
As if the sacred messenger goddess Iris had lent me wings
For what death should I fear
Besides one of dishonor and cowardice
Such faith gives me freedom
Such knowledge gives me power
With a final cry I raise my sword
And ride headlong into the fray

I really like this poem because it highlights the way the Greeks/Romans/people of that area felt about death and war and honor during these times. But this poem doesn't just have to be read in a mythological sense. Such lessons can be applied to today. It's mostly a battle cry. "Don't be intimidated if you are outnumbered by life's soldiers--fight with pride." That kind of lesson. ^_^ Enjoy.
