A Hundred Indecisions

He’s going to get in trouble for killing Hinamori, but right now he doesn’t care. If it breaks that white-haired brat then anything Aizen-taichou throws at him is child’s play.

Shinsou shoots so swiftly, its aim perfect. He’s so caught up, his senses tuned on Hitsugaya’s impending agony, that he doesn’t notice the figure slipping in front of his sword. He hears the grinding metal though, and feels the sudden halt reverberate back into his arm.

“Matsumoto,” her captain whispers.

She’s spilling apologies to her captain, apologies that she doesn’t mean, but her eyes are trained on him. She’s shuddering under the force of his blade but she doesn’t blink. There’s no physical weakness between them. Mentally, they are already shattered, hovering somewhere between life and death, love and hate.

Her breasts heave with breath. She pushes back, but only a little. Her wrists must be aching, on the verge of being fractured. “Please withdraw your sword, Ichimaru-taichou. If you don’t, your opponent will be me.”

She’s in no shape for fighting and he’s in no mood to fight her. Shinsou retracts slowly, revealing the deep fractures in her sword. Had it snapped, Shinsou would have pierced her throat. He marvels at how delicate their lives are. It’s one bit of luck, a tiny counterweight in the oceans of bad luck that drown them.

We’ve never been lucky, have we Rangiku?

He smiles, because he has to smile when he sees her. Even now, when she gazes at him with sunken eyes, heavy with hurt and anger, close to spilling tears that she doesn’t possess…even now, he smiles. She doesn’t smile back-she never does. It’s almost reassuring. He doesn’t know what he’d do if she ever smiled back.

She’s running out of chances, but she doesn’t know that. He wants to tell her, but telling her would ruin everything. He won’t ask her to come. He won’t place that burden on her. Besides, she’s a grown woman. She’s past following him around, depending on him.

She was starving when he found her and she is starving still. He knows the hunger in her eyes, knows it too well. Deep inside him, he is starving as well, wasting away. He wants to kiss her wrists, to massage the pain from them.

He is always causing her pain.

He turns and walks away like always.

He wonders what she sees when he turns his back on her.
