[Phoenix clears his throat, then addresses the comm politely.]

My name is Phoenix, and I would like to speak to the one known as Leonardo in regards to a matter that is best discussed in person. Are you amenable to meeting with me at some point in time this day?

what do you do with a drunken pirate, corrupting and terrible influence, etiquette etiquette, take you down any way i can, #leonardo

[Oh yes, he knows who you are now.] Fine.

[The one word response doesn't really give him a chance to hear Leonardo's voice, but something about it still strikes him as familiar, as though they might have spoken before.]

Very good, then. When would be most convenient for you?

Hmm. Well, I am currently at the Kuma-Ko restaurant, if you'd care to meet with me now.

[Oh yes, Leonardo, now would be lovely - now when he's all prepared~]

All right. [But by George, he's not going to like it.

Headed there now. GD it those bears worry him so much.]

[Phoenix is waiting for him, of course, sitting at a table by himself. There are no plates on the table, but there are two cups with no handles and two bottles sitting off to the side.

It's easy enough to know Leonardo when he sees him - who else would that giant turtle be? Phoenix lifts a hand to catch his attention, then inclines his head politely.]

Ah, Leonardo. A pleasure to meet you in person.

Right. [Leonardo pulls out a chair and quietly has a seat in it. His voice isn't condescending, just blunt as a hammer.] I would be polite, but I think you'd figure out that it's just a show for the sake of social grace and I've always valued honesty a little more than that. So let's get right to the point.

[Phoenix nods, serious though still maintaining a generally pleasant air.]

Fair enough.

Still, I feel it best to start this meeting off on the right foot, so to speak.

[He nods toward the bottles on the table.]

Your brother informed me that you are fond of things from a land known as Japan. From what I've been able to gather, these are traditional drinks from that place. I've never had them, of course, but I am willing to try new things for the sake of diplomacy, and I find that conversations run smoother when formality is observed.

Don't you agree?

[Leo doesn't spare the bottles a glance, having recognized them as he approached and sat down.]

It's sake, and thank you but I don't drink. [Not even sake. ...which he'd always wanted to try, just once, to see what it was like. But no, not now. Now was not the time.]

Sake?

[Phoenix echoes the word with one eyebrow raised.]

You'll pardon me if I don't know what the significance is - though I take it from your statement that it's alcoholic in nature. Hmm.

[He laces his fingers together and rests them on the table, leaning forward just a little. He is the picture of a man who honestly did not know what he was offering to Leo. Honestly. He meets the turtles eyes seriously.]

And so we come to the crux of the matter. I do not understand why you abstain when, from my view, you are clearly of age. You'd hardly get drunk from just one cup, so it cannot be that. What, then, is your reason?

The legal drinking age of our homeland is twenty-one. Not to mention that if I were to drink I would rather do it in the company of a person I trust to look after me in my inebriated state. As innocent as your intentions are, I'm afraid I don't trust you -or the nature of this place- in the least and would rather avoid dulling my reflexes and compromising my abilities in the case of an emergency. I hope you understand.

So, then, you are old enough that you are allowed to fight, potentially to die, but where alcohol is concerned, your homeland believes you're still a child?

[Phoenix shakes his head.]

I do apologize, but I fail to see the logic in that. All the rest - that you could persuade me as valid reasoning for your decision, except for the fact that you are not deciding this matter at all. You are merely supporting another's decision, not taking the lead yourself.

The circumstances concerning the necessity of my and my brothers' combat skills are unique to our situation and -I'm sorry- none of your business. Nor do I see the correlation between drinking and protecting one's life. I'll respect your own world's rules and regulations and assume that you've been raised in ways that differ from our own, but in the same breath I'll ask you do the same and avoid speaking ill of the manner in which we've been raised.

[Phoenix leans back in his chair, considering both Leonardo and the request. Finally, he nodded as though conceding the point.]

Very well, then.

[Then, casually, as though it didn't really matter...]

Ah well. Such a shame. It would be easier for you to make an informed decision if you had at least some experience with alcohol yourself. Michelangelo, for instance, was very firm in his resolve when last I spoke with him.

[A small, almost playful smile.]

And hasn't Raphael tried alcohol, too?

[Excuse me sir.

Leonardo scowls inwardly at the jab, half because it's none of this man's business but also because he's got no decent comeback for it.] Did Mike tell you that too?

It was mentioned, yes. Familial involvement did bear some influence on his decision, after all.

[That faint smile is still on his face as he steeples his fingers together.]

Something about the voice of experience being the voice of wisdom, though he didn't phrase it quite that way. Raphael must be very worldly, though. It's good that Mike could go to him.

[He's lying. Mikey never said any such thing. But Leo wouldn't know that, now would he? It should all sound so reasonable.]
