14th Frontier [audio // common - Locked to Jak, 69% Unhackable]

[Even after the comm clicks on, there is an awkward pause.]

...Jak. When it is... convenient for you, I would like to speak with you in person.

[He is trying to be polite. To Jak. With no love potion aiding him. No, he doesn't sound very comfortable at all.]

strange bedfellows, uncharted depths, dark warriors, #jak

[Jak's reasonably sure Phoenix must have been drunk to be so buddy-buddy with him at the party.

This is more like it.]

Where.

[Not drunk, but definitely under the influence, as he is now aware.]

Deck 15. On the island. I'm already there.

[There's no answer, but a few minutes later Jak descends the stairwell out into the caves.

He grunts at Phoenix.]

What's this about?

[Phoenix just looks at him for a moment, frowning faintly, but there's still something off in his stance. He ought be defensive. He ought to be belligerent.

But he doesn't know what to make of Jak.

He looks away and folds his arms.]

You said you would help me with Ganondorf. Does that still hold true?

[Jak's still wary. Despite everything that's happened lately, he doesn't trust Phoenix completely.]

I haven't changed my mind. I'll help.

[For Ashelin, and for Zelda.]

[Phoenix nods. Despite his own mistrust of Jak, Jak has struck him as a man of his word.]

I do not yet know how I intend to take him on. At this point, I am gathering as much information as I can. Thus far, you have been the only one with anything proven to be effective against his powers. Would you...

[He grimaces and takes a deep breath, then turns to face Jak. He tries to act nonchalant, but Precursors, this is awkward.]

Would you show me what you are capable of?

[That ... was not what Jak was expecting. He raises an eyebrow, his usual gruff facade dissipating.]

I'm capable of a lot of things. You'll have to be more specific.

[It's a fair enough point, but it still irritates Phoenix, as though Jak is deliberately being obtuse. He pushes the feeling back.

In all reality, the biggest reason why he's rankled is because of the uncertain footing of this whole conversation.]

In specific, I want to see how you wield light eco. But...

[And now this is the part that sticks in his throat.]

I... would like to know about the dark as well.

You actually want to see the Dark Eco?

[That's ... interesting. But there's no harm in showing him. Jak could easily overpower Phoenix if he tried anything while he was in his eco forms.

With a shrug, he takes a few steps back and concentrates, hunching his shoulders and almost curling in on himself. His skin pales to ashen grey, long black talons sprout from his fingers and gnarled horns twist their way out of grayed hair. It all happens in less than half a second, and when Jak opens his eyes again, they're soulless black and staring right at Phoenix.

As lurid purple Dark Eco skitters over his skin and occasionally snakes out to burn at the floor, he straightens up and grins. It's dark and dangerous, but mostly for show. He still can't help showing off.]

[Phoenix hisses and takes an involuntary step back. That brief moment in their fight on Jak's ship did nothing to prepare him for the full transformation. His hand immediately goes for his hip, but there's no gun there, nothing to defend himself with if Jak's control slips.

Control. Both Jak and Ashelin claimed that Jak could control this. It goes against everything Phoenix believes, every hard lesson he's had to learn, but in this moment, it's the only thing he has, and he needs to know if it's true.

He forces his feet still, clamps down on the terror that's making his heart race, and meets those dark black eyes. This isn't the first time he's seen a Dark Warrior, but it's the first time he's faced one without a gun or any kind of barrier between them.

He takes a deep breath, cursing himself when it shakes.]

Jak?

[Was Jak really still there?]

[Jak sneers, but he does tilt his head in understanding. He's in there.

His fingers twitch, the Dark Eco wants to eviscerate, to gut Phoenix right where he stands, spill his blood and hear his screams, bones cracking and--

He shakes his head sharply, and the sneer fades slightly. He can control this.]

[He hasn't been attacked yet, but that sneer does nothing to reassure Phoenix. Even so, he stands his ground, ignoring the voice in his mind that's screaming at him to run.

He lowers his voice.]

Are you even capable of speaking like this?

[Jak grunts, a rough sound like Metal Head claws over gravel. The grin that spreads across his face is not friendly.]

Perhaps~

[It's hissed out between sharp teeth, almost as if carried by the Dark Eco itself. It doesn't sound much like Jak.]

[It's still more than most of the Dark Warriors Phoenix has dealt with. Very, very few were still capable of speech after their transformation, and that ability was often soon lost. If Jak still has it, though, that's a good sign.

He hopes.]

And you can change back at will?

[Jak's eyes narrow slightly. The Dark Eco wants to stay, it wants to burn things, tear them down, spill blood across the caves. But he has control, and he fights against it.

Closing his eyes, he forces it back, deep down inside him. The transformation back is painful, like dragging glass over exposed nerves. It takes a few seconds for the effects to recede, and Jak clutches his head, breathing between gritted teeth.

When the color returns to his skin, he lets out a long breath, then straightens back up.]

[Phoenix will never admit how much relief he felt when Jak's hair and skin return to normal and the walls stop reflecting the flickers of sickly light. He exhales softly, a breath he'd unconsciously held.

He opens his mouth then closes it. Another awkward pause.]

Are you... all right?

[Is that concern in his voice?]
