[Phoenix curses under his breath, but there isn't much help for it. He hasn't been able to find them anywhere, not since that night that he can't remember.]

Damn it...

Has anyone seen a pair of flight goggles lying around?

[Locked to Jak - 69% unhackable]

[Phoenix opens his mouth, then closes it with a grimace, the desire to have his goggles ( Read more... )

[There's nothing actually said. Damas is wondering if Phoenix died again, actually, but wouldn't he be missing more things?]

Before or after Phoenix gets his goggles back? :3 ecopiracy August 13 2010, 10:51:55 UTC
[Unless Phoenix didn't care about what he'd been wearing at the time - or had been wearing anything else at all.

The possibility that someone might think he died hasn't crossed Phoenix's mind. He does, however, note that other ID's presence.]

Damas?

I trust you are not missing anything else of importance?

[You did not go and die on him again, you idiot. You couldn't have.]

[Phoenix blinks, then frowns as the importance of the question hits. After a moment, though, he barks a laugh.]

No. Thankfully, I have not misplaced anything else. I simply do not remember where or when I took my goggles off. Somewhere between Sergei's and deck five is most likely.

[The mention of Sergei's should clue Damas in well enough.]

You have not seen them, have you?

Ah. Good, I must admit I had my fears... but I have not seen them. My apologies.

[He'll mention nothing of Sergei's, though. For now.]

There's a certain amount of dry amusement in Phoenix's voice when he answers.]

Do you really think I make a habit of getting myself killed?

I am not certain what to expect with you, Phoenix.

[As you do not have his son's regenerative powers...]

You can expect that I do what I can to keep myself whole, except in those times where there is something more important at stake.

[Such as their encounter with Bass.]

Always good to know. You know what you hold dear.

[No, Phoenix swings to the other end of the spectrum, Damas. He doesn't deliberately place himself in danger without a good reason, but when he does, he can be almost suicidally determined.

Unfortunately, this is starting to touch on a subject that is still sensitive to Phoenix. He looks away from his communicator, and his voice is quiet.]

[You've struck a chord, Phoenix. Damas doesn't reply for a good long moment, lost in thoughts of his own shattered family.]

Every day.

[It comes out just above a whisper.]

[Phoenix takes a deep breath, then lets it out slowly. Somehow, he isn't surprised that Damas understands. Shaking his head, he steels the emotions away and focuses back on the conversation itself - though perhaps a change of topic would be appropriate now.]

How long have you been here, Damas?

[A long pause as Damas calculates.]

...Six months to the day. And you?

Almost nine months.

[He's quiet for a moment as the implications of that sink in.]

Long enough on both our counts that we have likely been replaced in the positions we held. If that is the case...

[A note of curiosity enters his voice.]

What would you do should you find a way to return to our world?

Hmm.

[Neither approving nor disapproving, just a considering sound.]

...I'm not certain what I would do. I still have my war to fight, and I am still very much a man of the sky, so part of me wants to do the same and reclaim my place with my crew.

But...

[He hesitates. How much should he say?]
