Characters: AU Tenjoin Asuka, AU Fujiwara Yusuke
Where: under a tree in the Commons
When: about mid-way through the smoke plot, before Yusuke meets with Ryou again. Mid-afternoon-ish.
Summary: Young Asuka happens across Yusuke while he’s looking at his cards. And so… they have a friendly little duel?
Warnings: A duel that is skimmed over. Me talking to myself again. And, of course, Young!Asuka. Other than that, this is pretty safe.
Seeing what had happened to so many other people in this place recently, Yusuke felt rather lucky that he had merely gained cat ears and a tail. Sure, they were a little bit awkward, but he had still managed to maintain a relatively humanoid shape, said form was - compared to some other ones that he could think of - pleasant to look at (and, he hoped Ryou had thought, to touch…), and he had kept his mind intact (which could hardly be said for many of the others here). He rather hoped that his luck continued to be as good as it had been so far… or if it did change, it was only in body…
But right now, he didn’t really feel like dwelling on those possibilities for a negative future. Really, all he felt like doing was sitting out in the Commons under a tree (that had no leaves, but then it was winter) and look over his cards. He was rather glad that he still had them, especially Honest. Vaguely, he wondered if anyone would want to have a duel later…
“What’re you doing, mister?”
Yusuke looked up upon hearing the sudden voice behind him… the cute little voice of a young girl. Turning toward it, he noticed a blond girl, no older than thirteen, peeking from the other side of the tree he was leaning against. She seemed almost familiar too…
…Wait. Hadn’t he noticed something over the journal things that Fubuki’s sister had started thinking that she was only thirteen around the same day he’d gotten his cat ears? Oh crud…
But then, she did think she was only thirteen at the moment, so maybe… since she was approaching him openly, as long as he didn't mention that, she wouldn’t get upset.
“I’m looking over my cards,” he replied with a smile.
Asuka was immediately intrigued by the cards that this young man with the cute cat ears had. “Ooooh, you play Duel Monsters? Brother and I play that too! Brother’s really great at it - he even got accepted to Duel Academy. I hope that I get to go there when I’m old enough, even though I’m not as good as Brother is.”
Still smiling, Yusuke replied, “I’m sure you’ll make it in just fine if you try hard enough.”
“Really? Thank you, mister!” Asuka replied with a bit of a cheer. Then, almost as a bit of an afterthought, she pulled out her own deck of cards. …Well, it wasn’t hers, she was pretty sure. She had looked through it, and she didn’t recognize a few of the cards in there. Which was a bit on the odd side, but she could manage. “Um… I was just wondering… would you like to have a duel for fun? I’m looking for someone, but just looking is boring.”
A duel? Wasn’t this what he had silently hoped for? ...Well, it might be fun. “Sure, if you want,” he replied. He’d been sitting on his jacket (he still didn’t feel the cold too much in this weather, even though the temperature was low), so he pulled it out from underneath him, set it out in front of him as a bit of a mat, and motioned for Asuka to sit down. “I don’t have a playing mat with me at the moment, so I hope you don’t mind if we play on top of my jacket so our cards don’t get dirty.”
Asuka gave a cheer before sitting down on the other side of the jacket.
And so, they shuffled each other’s decks and had a duel purely for fun. It was actually kind of close - admittedly, Yusuke had decided to go slightly easy on Asuka, knowing that she didn’t have the experience that he had gained these last several years. But that only encompassed not summoning the Clear Vice Dragon when he could have, and still Asuka managed to bring him down into the low hundreds of life points before the green-haired boy had managed to win.
“That was a really fun duel,” Yusuke told Asuka as they picked up their respective decks. “I hope we can do so again - it’s been a while since I’ve had as tough an opponent as you.” (Okay, that was a slight bit of a white lie, having fought Ryou fairly recently, but besides him.)
“Thank you, mister!” Asuka replied, happy that she had had so much fun. “I hope we can duel again soon too.”
Yusuke stretched a bit. “Well, I should probably get going now - I’m actually getting kind of thirsty myself. Would you like to come with me to get something to drink?”
Asuka thought this over for a moment. This man was a really nice man, and she was kind of thirsty, but… “Thank you for the offer, mister, but I should probably start looking for the person I was looking for again.” After a moment, she then added, “Oh, um… if you see an older girl - she has the same name as me, Tenjoin Asuka - could you tell her I’m looking for her? I have something of hers that I need to return to her, but I can’t find her anywhere, and I’ve been looking all over the place.”
“I can do that,” Yusuke replied with a nod. “I don’t know her well, but I know what she looks like, so I’ll tell her if I do find her. …But if you find her first, could you tell her something for me, too?”
“What’s that, mister?”
Yusuke’s eyes drifted toward the ground. “Could you tell her… that I’m sorry, for what happened?”
Asuka tilted her head. “Sorry for what? Did you do something that upset her?”
Had he been more open, he would have told her outright about what he had heard about Fubuki in the world that Asuka had come from. But he didn’t really want to upset her even if he had been more open, so instead, he just nodded slightly. “She’ll understand what I’m talking about.”
Asuka wondered for a moment just what this man could have meant by that, but she decided after a few moments that it couldn’t be anything to worry about. “All right, I’ll be sure to tell her for you when I find her.” She smiled, turned around, and began to walk off toward the side of Econtra that had a library, pausing only after she had walked a little ways to turn and wave, calling back, “Thanks again, mister!”
“You’re welcome,” Yusuke replied with a smile, waving back. Then, as soon as Asuka had left, he got up and began walking in the opposite direction, toward the Mess Hall. Some water sounded really good right about now.
