Pharaun didn't bother knocking this time; he had a feeling he'd lost over the conversation (because he always lost conversations with females; it was one of the immutable laws of Econtra) and he wasn't about to let Mercury have this all her own way.

All right, so waltzing in without knocking wasn't really a major victory. He'd take them where he could get them. "So, we meet again," he said, stating the obvious.

Mercury had been immersed in a book.

Her arrival hadn't noticed the spellbook - yet. She was sure he would. Mercury was faintly amused by Pharaun's attempt to take control simply by walking in. Why did he think the door was unlocked? Or, even more to the point, why did he think she'd let him choose the time?

So yes, she was expecting him. But expecting a better line than that. Was he going to disappoint her? Now? Tsk.

It was a shard of ice that flew right by Pharaun's head, far too close for comfort but intentionally missing.

Mercury looked up. "Oh. If I'd known you were coming right now~!" she said sweetly.

You would have aimed lower, he thought, almost laughing despite the near miss.

"Think nothing of it. I'm sure no harm was meant." At least to you. Then he noticed the spellbook. She's still using that? Lady of Lusts, this woman is stubborn. He kept his expression carefully neutral.

"You look stressed~!" Mercury said coyly as she turned herself around to sit a little more properly. "Shouldn't you sit down?"

Of course she was still using the spellbook. A little encouragement would probably make her chase him around the room with it. She picked it up now, which of course conveniently brought it closer and into better focus for Pharaun.

One thing she hadn't answered yet: Why had he agreed to come?

Pharaun cocked an eyebrow. "Stressed? Not nearly as stressed as some here, I can assure you." You're waving that blasted diary in my face, why shouldn't I be stressed?

"Oh, I almost forgot the applesauce!" Mercury excused herself suddenly. "Here. Hold this." The diary was, of course, thrust at Pharaun. And then Mercury was walking away - to, thankfully, the applesauce she'd promised.

Pharaun held the book gingerly, at arm's length, as if it was contaminated. He only held onto it for about five seconds, though - he dropped it on the table as soon as he could.

It had, of course, been intentional. Had he just dropped it? Tsk.

"Pharaun," Mercury said lightly, "Don't you think it's a little pathetic to worry about a few hearts? "But...if you want~ I can find a new cover for it." Her smile widened. Obviously any new cover would be far 'worse'.

But by now she was also bringing the applesauce over, having put it into bowls and found spoons from somewhere. It was warm, with just the right amount of cinnamon. Apparently Usagi had learned to cook. Mercury sat down on the couch again with hers after putting Pharaun's nearby.

Pharaun's eyes widened as Mercury's smile did - in horror. Still trying vainly to keep up a serene facade, he said, "No, no, I simply lost my grip." Just what he'd lost his grip on was open to interpretation. And the day started off so well, too.

He changed the subject. "That smells delightful."

Mercury was already nibbling at hers. Actually, it had been quite awhile for her, too, since she'd had applesauce. "You can sit down," she pointed out.

A thought crossed the drow's mind. You know you're distracted when you actually forget to sit down. "My thanks for your leave," he said, without any real venom. He had a spoonful of applesauce. And now I wish we could grow apples underground. This is delicious.

She'd utterly and completely turned around Pharaun's mind. Good. That meant they could probably go back to pretending to be acquaintances or allies or friends or whatever it was.

"It's quite alright," she assured him with slightly mocking courtesy. "It's good, isn't it?" This referring to the applesauce.

A fourteen-year-old human is running rings around me. This is not my day. Pharaun nodded agreeably. "So it is."

No day with Mercury would be Pharaun's day if she could help it. It was impossible to resist tormenting him, which raised the question yet again of why he had come.

Meanwhile, it seemed Pharaun had indeed remained unaffected by the fears and paranoia. Otherwise he'd have been even more scared of the diary. Should she requisition a pen with feathers and beads next? Then again, Pharaun rarely went out, and Mercury had learned the Master had needed contact to do it to someone, although he had admitted some were indeed also immune. Which was the case for someone he hadn't tried it with was uncertain.

Another bite of applesauce disappeared. It was good. The question of what in the world Mercury was doing happily nibbling on a snack made by a sailor senshi - no, by the princess of that one's world - was going to be ignored at least until it was finished.

"What do you usually eat?" she asked, curious now.

Pharaun had come because he was a glutton for punishment. Or possibly because he didn't know when to give up. Possibly both; it was difficult to tell with Pharaun, honestly.

"Quite a lot of mushrooms and other fungus, as one would expect underground, but Menzoberranzan imports a great deal of food from the surface." Evil or not, there was always someone willing to trade with the drow. Magic was, surprisingly, not particularly successful at allowing plants to grow in the Underdark.

"Oh, we should continue our lessons, shouldn't we?" Mercury mentioned. Of course that was the point all along; it hadn't exactly been a secret. If Pharaun hadn't guessed it, it probably wouldn't shock him, either. At least he was getting applesauce that he would have gotten anyway, of course as payment.
