Characters: OU!Shadow, OU!Rouge Where: Outside the compound, then back again When: Victory day Summary: Having taken Rouge to safety earlier, Shadow now goes to retrieve her. Warnings: None
Worrying was unusual for her and not at all something she was used to doing, but she found herself doing it all the same. Sticking around when there wasn't anything she could do except get hurt or be in the way would have been stupid, so when Shadow asked if she wanted to go elsewhere, she accepted. Which meant he was fighting without her by his side.
Those hours of not knowing as she sat in the desolate landscape were far worse than all the months she had spent here. Telling herself that he would be fine didn't do much to quell the thoughts in the back of her head. This was Shadow she was worrying about. Of course he'd make it back fine. But what if...
Relief washed over her when Shadow appeared over the horizon and she hurried to stand up and meet him halfway. He looked worse for ware, but he was alive and for that, she was more than grateful.
"Is it over?" Him being there meant it must've been, but undeniable confirmation was what she wanted right now.
Upon seeing her alive and well, Shadow slowed further as he closed the distance between them, and came to an easy stop. He was panting slightly again, worn out from the run after the day's events, but he felt remarkably collected considering how relatively out-of-shape he had been.
"It is," he confirmed, the relief in this fact evident in his voice. "The Warden is going to start sending everyone back in a couple of hours."
She didn't even realize that a few tears began to fall. A genuine smile crossed her lips. It had taken over a year, but now, it was over and her teammate had survived. That stupid hallucination they had forced her through would become reality and things could return to how they should be.
"We can finally go home." She wrapped an arm around his shoulders to give him a quick embrace before pulling away to look him over. "You didn't get injured, right?"
"I'm fine," he answered dismissively. Between the tactics the Entropi used and those he'd employed out of necessity, there had been no direct contact with those lightning-like whips that they usually utilized. Any injury he'd suffered had been internal. Judging by the blood he'd had to clean out of his nose and ears, there had been more of that than he had realized, but there wouldn't be any way for her to notice. The fact that he couldn't even see the extent of his injuries or feel anything beyond a constant full-body ache was concerning, but he would deal with that later. Rouge shouldn't have to worry about him right now.
Rouge nodded. "Nothing's come by to bother me." Something she was glad of. If an Entropi had wandered her way, she wasn't sure what she would have done. She shook her head clear of that thought. Now wasn't the time to dwell on something that was no longer relevant.
Wiping away the wetness from her face, her smile turned into a smirk and she got a couple feet off the ground. "I think we should hurry back. I've got to plan a vacation on a floating island."
What was that phrase? No rest for the wicked? Rouge, seemingly, was taking that to heart, and he couldn't help but return the smirk.
"Be sure to send me a postcard," he replied, then turned and began to retrace his steps. It was strange, thinking that they wouldn't actually return together, that they would be separated by several months and a major event or two. It wouldn't be much of a problem for him, since he was further ahead, but she would have to wait to see him for a while, instead watching as his younger self went through what she already knew would come. Strange indeed.
"I'll be sure to decorate one, just for you~" she said and winked playfully. "Maybe even Knuckie will be kind enough to sign it."
She followed after him, lost in her own thoughts. Things were going to be weird when she got back. What exactly had she been working on before she left? It was likely she was going to get taken back to that time, but the details were fuzzy. Hopefully it hadn't been anything important. She could already imagine being home for a day or two and receiving an angry call from GUN for not following through with some orders before taking a sudden leave of absence.
"Hm. Good luck on that," he said, chuckling softly at the thought.
Ah, the echidna, there was someone he hadn't thought about since he'd left this place. But he wouldn't find it very surprising if Rouge were to head straight to Angel Island upon returning, to go bother him. Whatever amused her so much about doing that he had never fully understood. Then again, what little he'd seen of their interactions had occurred when he had something far more important to pay attention to.
The trip was steady-paced and once the initial adrenaline rush slowed, her thoughts turned to more important things. They weren't going to be going home together. She was going to be alone when she got home, if the rumors were true about them returning to their own times.
He thought a moment, counting back the time, then answered, "Four, maybe five months." It was possible he was slightly off, of course - he'd sort of lost track of time during his period of amnesia. Keeping track of the days hadn't been something he'd been terribly concerned with at the time.
And now he found himself trying to remember what he'd been doing before he'd come here. GUN had sent him on some sort of mission, and he had been headed to his destination, but if he were suddenly dropped right back in his path, there was no way he was going to remember which direction he was supposed to head in. Hadn't he been trying to get there before Sonic? Maybe it would be best to just leave the other hedgehog to it, for once. There was too much he wanted to do when he got back that had nothing to do with racing that fool, for once. Although it would be good to see him again... until he tired of him a few minutes later.
"Hmph. Far too long, for my liking." She'd just have to manage. It would be strange working with him and knowing that he didn't remember everything she did. How difficult could it be to pretend nothing happened? As much as she hated almost every moment she spent in this place, the loss of comfort at having someone who knew exactly what she went through was disheartening.
"...Do you still have what I gave you for your birthday?"
Too long, yes, but if she had managed to survive here for as long as she had, then she could manage another few months of a slightly different sort of torture. He didn't like that any more than she did, but there was no helping it.
"Of course," he replied. "Why?" There had been no need to use the note, although that wasn't to say he didn't appreciate it. But since then, she had become more forthcoming, perhaps. Or maybe it was simply that an occasion in which it was needed had just not arisen since.
"When I catch up to your time, show it to me." It was the best way she could think of for him to simply show that she wasn't alone anymore. Hopefully items like that would travel with them when they were returned.
"I will." That would work. Just a simple hey, I'm back probably wouldn't have been obvious enough. If the coupon didn't come with him, he could just tell her, but having some scrap of immediately recognizable proof would be easiest.
The buildings of the compound were now visible in the distance. It wouldn't be much longer before they were back to that empty shell of a place that had both sheltered and imprisoned them for so long. He was glad to be rid of it.
Rouge kept quiet for a few moments as she focused on the town in the distance. This would be the last time she would have to be there. With the exception of a few people, the place had been nothing but an annoyance for her.
"I can't believe it's finally over. We've been here for more than a year and then suddenly, we're free to go," she said, breaking the silence.
"Mm." There was little that Shadow had to add to that. It had been sudden, he agreed, but it could have happened any time. Truthfully, he was surprised it hadn't been sooner. What had taken the Entropi so long? They hadn't moved all that far, and the Keepers had found them much sooner as well. Surely something that sensed life energy should have found them easily in this vast desert. What had they been waiting for?
It hardly mattered now, of course. But it was lucky the things had attacked in numbers. Had they just come one at a time, he doubted he'd be thinking about going home right now.
