September 29, 1998. A massive lift descending to Umbrella's secret lab beneath Raccoon City grinded to a halt. Officer Leon Kennedy was filthy from his trudge through the sewers and the dried blood that caked his uniform. His shoulder still burned from the bullet he'd taken for Ada Wong, but she'd shown her appreciation by patching him up ( ... )

Although she stood motionless, and did not breathe, something in her still froze like a startled cat at the clear, whispered words. Had he woken himself, the last lines of the dream on his lips? No: his next words dwindled to a mumble and off into silence. Watching him, Sylvanas felt traces of the surreal creep into her bones. She wondered what he was seeing behind his eyes. Should she wake him? Indecisive, the dark ranger resumed circling the room and the man at its center at a quickened pace.

It's up to us to take out Umbrella. So he'd told Claire and Sherry on that dusty road leading away from Raccoon, the sun rising before them. And with the longest night of his life over, the young cop went 7 years into the future. And opened his eyes to see he'd traded the walls of one doomed city for another ( ... )

Her features pinched into a frown. That was a nap. She had hoped he would rest longer. And why did she care? Not bothering to pursue that thought, the undead elf altered her course and dropped into the free chair. It drifted into his. She ignored it.

"Communication is still out," she informed him neutrally, then crossed her arms and closed her eyes, the bow tucked against her chest.

It was not true sleep, not in the way the living knew it. But her awareness dimmed and she meandered the paths of her mind like any dreamer. They brought her yet again to the wasteland stretching for impossible miles in all directions. Empty. It was utterly empty. Not even the restless dead wandered there. Remotely, she could still hear Leon going about his business, but it did not effect the scenes playing inside her head.

Around his tenth revolution, the federal agent stopped to lean by a wall and watch his charge in profile. As indefatigable as Sylv appeared to the rest of Neocontra (and to her own people no doubt), he supposed all but the mightiest gods needed to rest sometime. This was how the Forsaken Queen must look to her closest aides when she deigned to rest. Even if it was the kind of rest she needed to be ready to spring out of with longbow drawn, should any traitors among her think it wise to stage their own version of Julius CaesarHe clenched his fist at the thought. Saw himself gunning down every last one of those turncoats, and that surprised him. The only other Neocontran whose world's affairs mattered to him was Melaka. As far as Leon was concerned, when you started thinking like that about someone, you'd officially crossed over from the professional to the personal. This was a sign that on some level... he did care deeply about Sylvanas. Enough to wish he could keep right on protecting her, even in her own territory ( ... )
