Faye was watching when the Obex went down. She'd been watching ever since, leaning with her back against the wall of Building One, smoking, and staring out into the wasteland beyond the town. She'd gone through half a pack of cigarettes already. She looked down occasionally, as the other residents posted wildly on their PDAs, and she commented from time to time, but her eyes always returned to that gray horizon.
Abruptly, as if responding to some signal no one else could sense, Faye pushed off of the wall and walked to the very edge of the town, to the point where the Obex had stood, but no further. She stood there a while, her hands shoved into the pockets of her bomber jacket, her cigarette dangling from her lips. After a bit she glanced up at the Keepers, who still hovered overhead. She knew the Joker had gone outside, but....
After some hesitation, a look of determination crossed her face and she took one single step. She was now outside Neocontra. Nothing happened. She stepped back.
Faye paused for a few moments, then set her jaw and started walking, straight out into the wasteland. After only fifty yards or so she stopped, the skin on her back crawling with anxiety. She turned around to look at the compound... it looked so small in all the vast, empty space. She turned around to face the wasteland once more.
There's really nothing out here, she thought. Nowhere to go. I'd starve, or die of thirst, or exposure. ...Something's coming, though, the Warden's made that clear- it's probably the Entropi- and I don't think I want to be here when the shit hits the fan. ...Maybe if I got one of the magic-types to come with me, one of the ones that can make food appear out of nowhere.... She shook her head. No. The Entropi could pick off two people alone in the wasteland, easy. There's nowhere to hide. No, the best plan is to stay with the Consulo, that's still my best ticket out of here. Stick to the plan, Faye.
Faye eyed the twisted, dead trees that were all that remained to prove there had once been life here. What used to be here before, I wonder? A forest? She looked at the ground, kicked a little divot in the dust with the toe of her boot, then crouched down to dig deeper with her gloved hands. There was nothing in the dirt, no bugs, no worms, no fungus... it was dry, dead. She stood again, dusting off her hands, and returned her contemplative gaze to the waste that stretched clear to the horizon.
The Earth from her own dimension was trashed, buildings crumbled, cities destroyed, pocked with craters, its few remaining residents poor, destitute, eking out an existence underground. ...This was worse. "Save the Earth," she muttered. Ridiculous. "What's there left to save?"
