Saioh walked calmly towards the dueling field wearing his usual dreamy expression, as though he were simply out for a stroll with a Duel Disk strapped to his wrist. He did, however, pick out the duelist he was looking for and let his eyes focus on him.

"Johan Anderson, I presume," he said.

Johan looked at the person who called his name and nodded. That wasn't Kaiba, obviously, so it was either Saioh Takuma or Siegfried von Shroider. "One of my opponents, I presume?" he asked with a faint grin. The Gem Beasts murmured to one another, pleased that everything was about to get started.

"Saioh Takuma, at your service," said Saioh with a polite inclination of his head. His gaze shifted to somewhere slightly beyond Johan, his brows knitting slightly. "You brought friends."

Johan tilted his head some. "You can see the Gem Beasts?" He'd wondered who else around there could see the spirits of Duel Monsters. Could this Saioh do it?

Saioh shook his head. "I can't see Duel Spirits, but I generally know when they are nearby."

Oh. Oh, well. "Well, these are the Gem Beasts. They're more than my friends...they're my family." He grinned widely. "And they're as ready for this duel as I am."

"Then I will endeavor to provide you with an interesting battle," said Saioh. "If nothing else, you may find my style of play is a bit unusual."

Johan was ready for anything and everything. "Can't wait to see it. And the Gem Beasts and I have a few tricks up our sleeves as well." Which was a good trick in and of itself, as his dueling outfit did not actually have sleeves.

"Very well," said Saioh politely. "Would you like to take the first turn, or shall I?"

"You can have it," Johan said with a grin. He liked to see what his opponent was like quickly by letting them go first.

"As you wish. Let us see what Fate holds in store for both of us."

Saioh took his position and drew his first cards, and nodded in satisfaction. At least he would be starting with a moderately good hand.

"I summon Arcana Force III - The Empress," he declared. The card appeared projected above him, and began to spin. "Tell it when to stop."

Johan eyed that, grinning a little. This was going to be fun. "All right." He waited for a few moments, then decided. "Stop now!"

The card slowly slid to a stop, halting right-side-up. Saioh smiled.

"Heads, I win," he said. "When the card is set in upright position, it permits me to normal-summon an Arcana monster from my hand every time you normal summon a monster. How do you like this? You control your own destiny."

"I've always done that," Johan replied with a grin. He'd made up his mind from the start that he wasn't going to let his talents go to waste, which was why he'd chosen to enter the slave dueling system in the first place. That did make things a bit tricky for an idea or two that he'd had, but he was willing to wait to put them into action.

"We'll see," said Saioh. He selected another card from his hand. "I'll set this and end my turn."

"My turn! I draw!" Johan drew quickly and checked over his hand. Good, good. "I summon Gem Beast Cobalt Eagle!"

The brown-feathered bird shimmered into existence, shrieking a challenge. It's good to be in a fight! Johan agreed completely. And since Cobalt was so eager for battle...

"Cobalt Eagle, attack the Empress!" There was that face down card, but Johan was willing to risk it. The thrill of dueling shot through him as it hadn't in far too long.
