The Spartan was gone and Keyes was alone in the apartment. He hadn't seen their other roommate for some time now, though he knew it hardly meant the man was gone from this world. He figured the lawyer was simply busy himself and spent little time in the apartment. Keyes longed for excitement. He didn't wish any ill will upon the compound. No, he would much rather be back home aboard a UNSC starship. Even if it meant returning to battle the Covenant in a loosing war against the allied aliens. Even if it meant returning to his inevitable death upon the Halo. He would rather be there, where he knew the lay of the land so to speak, and anticipating a fight didn't mean involving--he belayed that thought. Civilian lives were lost constantly during the raging war against the Covenant. Their seeming sole purpose was to wipe out the entire human race; it was ludicrous to think that the war was only being fought by trained professionals.
What he really meant, and truly felt, was that he didn't want anything bad to happen to this compound and the people within. It was the same back home; he never liked hearing of the latest battle for a doomed planet. But here just felt different, and he thought differently. But that was an illusion and he tried to wipe it from his mind. The point was he wanted action, but hated to wish it upon anyone. "Be careful what you wish for" the old adage said. He knew he was going to regret his idle thoughts later one day, possibly very soon.
Pushing all of that aside for the time being, Keyes went through his mental list for things he could do today. In the end he was left with nothing compelling or absolutely necessary. The action here was worse than staring at a snail for hours on end. There was nothing to do.
With a sigh Keyes resigned himself to another boring day of searching for something to pass the time. He'd read a book or two since arriving here, but reading wasn't his sort of thing. He tried study naval battles from various histories, but that was just more reading. He'd done plenty of PT and he was now in better shape than he'd been for years. He was getting old and tired more easily, but damn if he wasn't getting back into it easily and managing to keep up with several of the younger people he saw and occasionally spoke with. He watched the Spartans with envy every so often, but knew no one could ever hope to be like them. He was just grateful they accepted him. That was enough.
So he had nothing to do. More PT was out of the question; yesterday he'd nearly ran his legs off as he jogged an endless circle around the compound. He knew better than to push his aging body, but he had really wanted to keep up with that young punk. He didn't feel like straining his eyes with a book. There was nothing in the apartment that needed cleaning or picking up. There was nothing.
And then it struck him. The Spartan was gone because she'd gone to join the Chief in keeping the infirmary guarded. She'd taken Halsey with her in the idea that the doctor could help with the injured. Keyes wasn't entirely sure how much Halsey knew about the medical sciences, but she was a genius and somehow it wouldn't surprise him to learn that she was a brain surgeon as well as a rocket scientist.
Keyes couldn't offer any aid other than an extra set of hands if they really needed the help even by this late point in time. He had no training in medical procedures, and he barely remembered any of the rudimentary first aid he'd learnt in basic so long ago. Besides, really, most should be recovered by now, but even so Keyes could go down there if for no other reason than to simply check up on the Spartans and Doctor.
The captain headed out as soon as he'd decided on the idea. He was dressed casually--for him. He hadn't been able to request spare uniforms before the Indigeo ran off, and quite frankly he had been hesitant to try in the first place because he didn't want the exact details concurrent with his particular universe and UNSC uniforms specifically to be left out, or worse, messed up. It was a matter of pride. So instead he'd managed to grab a few civilian cloths to wear on a daily basis in this world. He'd settled for a gray suit (the closest he could manage to a naval officers uniform without actually wearing one) and simple T-shirt underneath it today. It was a little tacky, but he reconciled himself by telling his brain that it was because he was going to be inside an infirmary and possibly working. The suit felt baggy even though it was well tailored. He was used to the tight, perfect uniform of his profession. He tried not to constantly adjust it because he felt odd in it. It was a true battle of wills.
He made it to the infirmary and headed inside. Keyes, being who he was, always looked as though he had a purpose no matter where he went or what he was doing. The captain simply had that air about him. He could be completely lost and still appear to know exactly what he was doing. That "facade" was put to good use as he entered the infirmary. He didn't know where exactly in the building he was headed, but that wasn't apparent in his movements or expression. His best guess, however, was that the Chief would be somewhere close by. If he wasn't, nor Linda, his next best bet was that they were with Halsey and he would have to find them all inside the building somewhere.
