Deciding to check to see if Heero was awake before knocking because he didn't want to actually wake him up. He was running a bit later than he thought he would have been, so he supposed the other pilot might have just drifted off while waiting. It didn't really matter, but he figured he could use someone who wasn't going to be playing nurse-maid in an overly obvious way... like say, a Quatre...

He poked his head in the door quietly and glanced around.

Heero was flopped on the couch in as comfortable a position he could get into with all his bruises, eyes open but staring distantly into space, so lost in thought he didn't even glance at the door as it creaked open.

Duo frowned at the lack of response. He stepped in then, closing the door behind him. "Heero?" he asked quietly. He moved towards the couch.

Heero blinked and turned his head to glance over at Duo. "Oh. Hey." He took a deep breath and pushed himself up a little. "Duo. Are you okay?" He hadn't seen him for a while.

Duo paused just short of the couch. He stared at Heero for a second, as if he was debating his answer. Then, he shrugged, waving off the question. "Yeah, I'm fine!" he said, maybe a bit too quickly. "Why wouldn't I be?"

Heero grave him a serious glare. "You know perfectly well why," he said gravely. But if Duo didn't want to talk about it he didn't have to. He let it go and looked away. "But it's okay. It's good to see you. I'm afraid I'm not a great host today," he added as he flopped over again.

Duo cringed. Yeah, okay, so he wasn't so discreet about that. Either that, or Heero just knew him better than he thought. He sighed and sat down. "Don't worry about it," he said, unable to hold back a sympathetic wince as Heero's stiff movements. "You got it good, huh?" he said. He recognized the movements for someone who was hurt around the torso, having gone through that a few times himself. "What happened?"

"I--had a scuffle with Melaka Fray," Heero admitted. "It could have been a whole hell of a lot worse." He sighed and shook his head.

"Yeah... I'm thinkin' it coulda been..." Duo said quietly. "She's built to kill vampires. Measly little humans like us must be nothing to her." He grimaced, hating that fact. This whole place had been a majorly humbling experience. Duo shifted, turning himself so he was sitting sideways and facing Heero, then pulled his legs up on the couch. He wrapped his arms around his knees, resting his chin on them. "So... what now?" he asked.

Heero shrugged, then winced. He had to stop doing that. "Now that Melaka isn't going to go on a killing spree, I can explain to everyone that I was acting in self defense, and hopefully the alliance will decide not to punish me or anything. Like they could do anything to me here," he snorted.

"That would be like... really helpful," Duo said expectantly. "We've been wrackin' our brains on this one and trying to keep you outta trouble." He sighed heavily. "I mean... I guess they can't do anything major, but..." He shrugged. "Doesn't mean you gotta make it worse than it needs to be..."

Heero shook his head. "I appreciate you trying to keep me out of trouble but it really wasn't necessary. This is already a prison. If they wanted me to sit in a room for a while to make them all feel like they have a semblance of order, I would have done it. But the alliance is made up of reasonable people. They'll understand."

Duo gave him a worried look. "I guess. It's just... it's frustrating. I wanna help. But, you're leaving me basically with my hands tied on this... and I always hated bein' tied up."

Which only brought back thoughts of what had happened. Duo's look darkened slightly as he dropped his gaze to avoid Heero's.

"It's over," said Heero quietly. "Hopefully, things will be all right now. Or, as right as they can ever be here."

"Yeah... hopefully..." Duo sighed. And, no... he wasn't really completely alright, but he was better than he had been. There was a reason Heero hadn't seen him around. He'd been keeping to himself, staying in his room, not talking to anyone. That was completely not like him at all. Wufei had let him be, but his double and Hilde finally managed to drag him out and force him into interacting again. Oddly enough, it had been what he needed.

Heero nodded wordlessly. His stomach still clenched unpleasantly when he remembered digging up that coffin and hauling Duo out of the ground. He could so easily have died down there. To have his friend die in that dark cold place, frightened and alone, was something Heero didn't think he could ever had dealt with.

But perhaps it was just as bad to have survived it. "When I'm better," he said thoughtfully. "We should find something interesting to do."
