The anger Wufei had been feeling at Heero earlier for keeping the knowledge of Harth's sister and the threat she presented to them from him had somewhat faded into dull irritation that was exacerbated by other knowledge he had recently come by due to his recent conversation over his comm with the other Wufei; Heero's post, however, had caused him to feel some concern about the other pilot.

He didn't bother with knocking. If Heero wasn't mobile, there was no point. Instead, he pushed the door open, walking into the room without hesitation, looking around until he spotted the couch and its occupant.

"Nicely done," he commented, surveying the damage.

Heero sat up, giving Wufei a slightly wry look. "I try." He sighed. "This was all a big mess," he admitted.

"Yes," Wufei said as he took over the nearby chair, allowing Heero his space. "Though worth it in the end."

Heero eyed him a moment. Last they had spoken Wufei had been pretty angry at him. "I suppose so," he said. "I guess I caused a lot of trouble, though I don't know why I'm surprised. Nothing here ever turns out as expected."

"You didn't plan to confront Harth before I accepted his invitation, so of course you were unprepared for the political backlash that occurred. Though you seemed prepared enough for the physical backlash."

Wufei had not at all appreciated the fact that Heero had tried to protect him. If the other pilot had lost his life in an attempt to protect Wufei's safety ... "I am tired of people dying or being injured to protect me, Yuy. Despite my lack of strength here, I would have preferred to stand on my own and face what was coming."

"I'm sure you would have," Heero replied. "But I wasn't injured to protect you. I was silent to protect you. She would have come after me anyway. I was making sure she didn't come after anyone else as well."

He shook his head. "I didn't think there would be any political backlash. I didn't know anyone would care that much. No one's shown any concern before. Who in the alliance helped dig up Duo and the others? When we had a bunch of other vampires running loose, torturing people, no one gave a damn. I kill one of them, and suddenly it's everybody's business."

Wufei's eyes narrowed. He'd suspected ever since the female Fray had been brought to his attention, but having his suspicion confirmed did not please him.

"You admit then that it was not Relena you were trying to protect by silencing me by mentioning the repercussions towards her. Don't think I'm going to thank you for that. You might not have expected the whining and outcry, but I did. There was certainly enough of it back in our world whenever the public heard about a Preventer mission after the fact which outcome offended their delicate, pacifist sensibilities. Miss Darlian would have been more than capable of handling any criticisms launched towards her because her association with myself and my behavior. Eliminating the threat Fray posed to her was more important than that, besides, once it became apparent to me that the Alliance was unwilling to do what was necessary."

Heero glowered just a bit. "Of course I was thinking of her. If Fray had come to your apartment--to your room--to hunt you down, what then? Besides, I knew I was going to be incapacitated. I wanted to know that you would still be able to watch out for her."

"Funny," Wufei said, his voice a sarcastic drawl, "I might have been counting on the fact that you would offer to take on the position yourself, if I was injured or killed while attempting to take Fray on. But it does seem that it is for the best that you didn't, after all."

"For the best?" Heero shrugged. "I guess. She knows me, knows I'm friends with Quatre, who she likes a lot. I was hoping she'd remember that, and it seems she did. You're a stranger to her. I just thought..." he sighed and looked away. "It seemed like the best course of action at the time."

"You thought it would be better for her to have a guardian who would not confuse her with her double, whom he had already confused for her?" Wufei asked, his tone one of patent condescension. "In that much you are correct. With myself at her side, she will have no need to worry of inappropriate behavior."

Heero's eyes went dark as a prickle of cold anger ran up his spine. He had been talking about Melaka Fray. But Wufei...he was talking about Relena. He sat up further, ignoring the pain. "What?" he seethed.

But the anger was focused less on the words and more on Wufei's shockingly astute assessment of Heero's situation, like being caught in an uncomfortably unfavorable position. His confusion about the two Relenas and his inability to separate his feelings for each of them was a sore spot. One he didn't like having dragged out in front of him all of a sudden. "I've never..." He set his jaw; he really couldn't say that now, could he?

Unfortunately for Heero, Wufei had learned more than he ever needed or wanted to know about Heero's relationships with the two different Relenas. "You're denying it? From what I have been told you were rather quick to jump into bed with someone who looks exactly like Miss Darlian, only without her sense of proper conduct."

"You don't know anything about it," Heero growled. "And you don't know anything about her!" He couldn't explain how lost and miserable he had been right before this girl with Relena's face and his past had shown up and kissed him and gave him a kind of comfort he hadn't ever experienced before.

Of course, if he didn't have a hundred nagging doubts about the whole affair, he probably wouldn't be getting so angry and defensive. Deep down he knew she didn't so much help as commiserate and comfort. And he also knew that the feelings he had for one Relena most certainly sprang from those he had for the other, whom he already had many conflicting feelings about before ever coming here.

"You're right in that. I have no desire whatsoever to involve myself with any woman, here or elsewhere, so the chances I will understand why you would do such a thing are slim. However, as far as saying that you don't know anything about her, I could say the same about yourself." As always, when Wufei saw a weak point, he could not stop himself from digging deeper.

Heero stared at him. "What is that supposed to mean?" he growled.
