Duo took little pride in his ultimate decision, which was to climb up top to the bunk bed, climb under the covers and attempt to ignore Wufei. It was because of his promise made to Mel that he didn't want to talk to his friends, of course, it meant lying, and that was the last thing he wanted to do.

He lay down on his bed, covered only in two throw pillows as he favored the blistering, bandaged burns. spread on his chest and shoulders.

Wufei found the other young man hiding in his own blankets, and briefly considered the merits of dragging him down from the bunk. He'd obviously felt well enough to climb up.

But that would probably be unwise. "Are you going to make me climb up there after you?"

Duo turned his head to look at him, his eyes clearly annoyed. "Leave me alone already, will ya?" Another thing he didn't need was a bedside manner that rivaled Heero's. It was bad.

"Hmmmmmm," Wufei said, as though he were really considering Duo's request, before coming to a conclusion. "No."

"What do you want, then?" As expected, Duo was irritable, irritable because ever since he'd woken up the morning before, he'd been unable to sleep. Insomnia was not a good thing for a guy who hardly had enough sleep as it was.

"The fiery destruction of every fast-food outlet in Brussels that pretends it is capable of making 'authentic traditional Chinese cuisine'," Wufei replied as he moved to the foot of the bed and began to climb up the ladder, carefully placing his weight so that he did not shake the bunk too much. "But since Sally has forbidden me access to incendiary devices without her approval code, I shall settle for assurance that you are not on the verge of dying, and being told exactly what happened that could take you down."

A.. A.. Joke? From Wufei? Duo stared at him long and hard, lips parted half way, brows perked high on his forehead. He rolled over so he was face up, supported by his elbows. Under his tang top, the bandages were clearly showing.

Now he had questions, but Wufei had thrown down a gauntlet. "Maybe I should just.. ya know.. go to china and decimate the fast food industry. We all know Chinese can't make a good cheese burger if their lives depended on it." It was a test, really, snarly, kind of dry humor, but if Wufei could grin and bear such a lame comeback, he'd accept the company, for a while.

Wufei was used to getting that look in response to his rare attempts at humor; he generally received it from people who thought he was incapable of being anything other than deathly serious or sarcastic.

"I might be willing to provide backup in such a mission; the Chinese have grown fat since Western food took over their diet. On the other hand, I don't particularly wish to have to prosecute myself for genocide after depriving an entire country of its primary food source."

He finished his short climb and sat on the edge of the bunk bed, looking down at Duo, carefully noting his injuries, but not remarking upon them yet.

Duo smiled, brows relaxing, but now furrowed in devious amusement, before his entire expression fell blank. "Funny." he said, finally, leering at his comrade through the dim light.

"I have been known to make the occasional attempt," Wufei said, inclining his head in acknowledgment. "Good to know I will not need to try to figure out if Quatre counts as your next as kin, no matter how much I enjoy being the bearer of bad news. You had someone help you with that?"

"I Did." Duo replied, completely unwilling to mention who, and why. If he didn't say anything, he wouldn't have to lie, after all. He closed his eyes, sighing, "I didn't get a chance to see who it was... ya know.. who shot me.."

Given how much he himself had been pushed recently to give up information he did not wish to give, Wufei wasn't going to push too hard -- just now, at any rate. "Do you ate least know what is that you were shot with? Or perhaps the person who helped you saw it?"

All he could do was shake his head. Again, it was best not to say anything. He crossed his arms and looked down to the side, off the edge of the bed. "Just hurts."

Somehow, Wufei doubted that this was all Maxwell knew. But very well; he had been the unfortunate recipient of both Quatre's interest recently and was still smarting, and he wasn't going to put Maxwell through a similar interrogation. "Of course it does. Getting shot normally does. This is why we usually go to great lengths to avoid it."

Duo grit his teeth. How could he have known that Harth was the blond guy, and for that matter, how could have known that the instant he arrived, Harth was going to shoot him, with a laser, or.. lighting, or whatever it was. Duo looked away, feeling pretty sorry for himself, knowing it could have been prevented. On the other hand, he did take a blow for Mel.. And.. He grimaced, turning his face to the side to cough. Thing about that was, he'd never had a consistent cough before in his life. Coulda been from being outside so long, bleeding.. probably was.

What more was the fact that he hadn't slept since the other night..

Wufei did not show the small wince he wanted to share with the other man; Duo would not appreciate sympathy from him even if he were inclined toward showing it. "That does not sound like healthy recovery," he noted.
